About The Position

Syndio is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their team. This role reports directly to the Director of Engineering and will focus on problems that span across the organization. Key areas of focus include building outward-facing platform surfaces, developing internal tools and agentic solutions to empower various teams, and providing senior technical capacity where needed. A significant current emphasis is on the third-party ecosystem, including integration apps within major HRIS and enterprise service management platforms, and the APIs that external systems and developers use. The role also involves owning internal tooling and agentic projects, leveraging AI capabilities, and contributing to identity and authentication services. The Staff Engineer will be expected to deeply understand authentication and authorization, as integrations rely heavily on identity, permissions, and tenancy mapping. This position requires a high degree of autonomy, the ability to gather requirements directly from senior leaders, and to execute independently at times. Success will be measured by the extent to which customer work can be done within existing systems, the effectiveness of internal tooling, and the impact on key objectives.

Requirements

  • Staff-level engineer with a high-output approach that elevates the performance of those around them.
  • Deep experience in complex, distributed, service-based systems, with comfort reasoning about failure modes, data consistency, and latency across service boundaries.
  • Strong proficiency across the tech stack: Python, Go, Node/JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Postgres, and NoSQL stores (e.g., Firebase). Proficiency in several is expected, with a willingness to learn others.
  • Familiarity with caching layers like Redis and their associated tradeoffs.
  • Ability to move between problem domains and become useful quickly in unfamiliar codebases or business areas.
  • Genuine enjoyment of experimenting with new technology and building rough prototypes to understand their shape.
  • Significant integration experience, including building against third-party platforms and understanding the associated challenges (quirky APIs, undocumented behavior, certification, breaking changes).
  • Experience designing APIs for external consumers, understanding the discipline required for developers to depend on them.
  • Fluency in authentication and authorization: OAuth 2.0 / OIDC / SAML, token lifecycles, multi-tenant authorization models, and the ability to explain trust boundaries.
  • Testing as a first-class skill, with strong end-to-end and integration testing experience in service-based architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with an e2e framework (Playwright, Cypress, or similar) and a perspective on testing systems where inter-service bugs occur.
  • A strong agentic development practice, including daily use of coding agents, tuning their usage, and building reliable harnesses (tight test loops, strong CI/CD, spec-to-code workflows).
  • High autonomy: ability to be handed an ambiguous problem and a senior stakeholder and deliver a tangible outcome.
  • Strong cross-team collaboration skills and the ability to translate technical constraints into business language.

Nice To Haves

  • Product management instincts, including scoping, prioritization, writing requirements, and effective 'no's.
  • Prior experience publishing an app to a major enterprise marketplace or app store (HRIS, enterprise service management, CRM, collaboration platforms).
  • Direct experience with Auth0 or comparable identity providers.
  • Hands-on experience building with AI systems (LLM applications, agent frameworks, retrieval, evaluation harnesses).
  • Experience in a domain where correctness is non-negotiable and errors have significant consequences.
  • Partner- or developer-facing experience (supporting external integrators, running a partner program, writing well-received API documentation).

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship integration apps hosted inside third-party platforms (major HRIS, enterprise service management, etc.).
  • Own the full lifecycle of integration apps, including platform SDKs, app frameworks, tenancy and installation models, marketplace certification, versioning, and upgrades.
  • Build internal tooling and agentic projects to support the organization, including scaffolding, verification, and agents for manual tasks.
  • Identify internal workflows suitable for agent automation and build the necessary tooling, guardrails, and verification.
  • Sharpen agentic development workflows and establish best practices for the team.
  • Design and build APIs for third-party systems and external developers, considering versioning, backward compatibility, rate limiting, pagination, idempotency, webhooks, and error semantics.
  • Own the developer experience for APIs, including documentation, examples, SDKs, and sandbox environments.
  • Contribute to identity and authentication services, partnering with engineering and architecture teams.
  • Apply deep knowledge of authentication and authorization (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, token exchange, machine-to-machine credentials, service accounts, scoped access) to all designs.
  • Treat security-critical work with the utmost importance, ensuring defensible access controls.
  • Work across team boundaries, ramping quickly in unfamiliar codebases and improving them.
  • Prototype and evaluate unfamiliar technologies, making clear recommendations for adoption or avoidance.
  • Partner with technical leaders to set standards for testing, API design, security review, and agentic workflows.
  • Gather requirements directly from senior leaders (engineering, product, GTM, customer-facing teams) and translate business needs into technical plans.
  • Operate independently at times without dedicated product support, gathering requirements, making decisions, and shipping solutions.
  • Translate technical realities to non-technical stakeholders, explaining possibilities, costs, and trade-offs.

Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation ($180,000 - $200,000 CAD per year)
  • Syndio Equity
  • 20 days paid time off annually
  • Paid sick & safe time
  • Compassion leave
  • Paid parental leave
  • Medical, Dental, Vision insurance (Syndio pays 90% of employee premiums, 50% for dependents)
  • Additional Private Medical coverage
  • RRSP Plan
