About The Position

The Staff, Software Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor responsible for designing, building, and operating Walmart’s core transportation platform. The role combines technical leadership with software delivery: writing production code, leading architectural decisions, and owning complex initiatives from design through deployment. The position calls for a versatile backend engineer with experience across distributed systems, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and modern web applications. Walmart’s engineering culture embraces AI-native development, including agentic coding tools, while maintaining high standards for quality, security, scalability, and maintainability. The team builds and operates a core transportation platform supporting Walmart’s global supply chain by connecting suppliers, carriers, and internal operations at scale. It develops cloud-native, full-stack solutions for the freight lifecycle—from planning and execution through tracking, settlement, and carrier experience—for private fleet and third-party transportation. The team uses AI-native engineering and intelligent automation to accelerate delivery and simplify logistics workflows, aiming to improve transportation efficiency, reduce operating costs, and support omnichannel growth. The role delivers platform capabilities, leads software development lifecycle activities, applies cloud-native architecture principles, reviews system designs, and builds AI-driven applications incorporating machine learning. It also involves mentoring engineers, influencing technical decisions, collaborating with stakeholders, and improving engineering processes, tools, and products. The position is based at 2608 SE J St, Bentonville, Arkansas. Walmart states that it maintains a drug-free workplace and prohibits the use of illegal drugs and alcohol on the job.
