Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure
About The Position
The Cloud Infrastructure team delivers and operates the foundational platforms and cloud environment that power Airbnb, providing reliable, secure, efficient, and ergonomic platforms for Airbnb services. The team works with the open-source community and peer companies on cloud-native engineering challenges at scale. As a Software Engineer on the team, you will develop and operate infrastructure supporting teams across Airbnb. The work focuses on developer APIs and CLIs, Kubernetes infrastructure, autoscaling and capacity management tools, and cloud infrastructure automation. The team prioritizes reliability, scalability, efficiency, and high availability.
Requirements
- 10+ years of industry experience with a BS or master's degree, or 2+ years with a PhD; preferably in computer science, or equivalent experience.
- Proven track record developing and operating large-scale technical projects in collaboration with experienced engineers.
- Proven experience operating Kubernetes at scale and detailed knowledge of Kubernetes.
- Expertise with public cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and their IaaS offerings, such as EC2.
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Full-cycle development mentality, strong ownership, and experience building and operating high-scale distributed systems throughout the software life cycle.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate within and across engineering teams.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and production debugging skills.
- Passion for efficiency, availability, reliability, and overall system quality.
Responsibilities
- Build cloud-native infrastructure using public cloud technologies.
- Deliver secure, efficient, mature, and highly available frameworks and platforms that simplify infrastructure complexity.
- Optimize and enhance existing systems and services to improve performance and operational efficiency.
- Improve system availability by implementing distributed-systems best practices.
- Collaborate with infrastructure engineers to establish a foundation for Airbnb’s technological growth.
- Develop and operate infrastructure components, including developer APIs and CLIs, Kubernetes infrastructure, autoscaling and capacity-management tools, and cloud infrastructure automation.
