Staff Software Engineer, AI Platform (US - Remote or Calgary)

Syndio•Home, WV
•$205,000 - $225,000•Remote

About The Position

Syndio is hiring a staff-level engineer to take ownership of major runtime surfaces of Syndi, its AI platform, and grow into a technical owner of the platform. Syndi provides a shared agent experience across in-product chat, Slack, and Teams. Its syndi-api runtime handles orchestration, tool calling, memory, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), evaluations, and observability. The platform is in production, recently shipped its first version, and is designed so product teams contribute domain content while the platform owns the experience. This is a high-autonomy role on a small team of 3–4 engineers. The engineer will design, ship, and operate systems end to end, working directly with product-team owners through the platform’s contribution interfaces. The work includes developing core runtime capabilities, growing the evaluation system, operating production systems, improving how product teams integrate with the platform, and implementing compliance and legal requirements. The role is remote-first in the US and Alberta, with a non-mandatory office available in Calgary. The stated annual salary target is $205,000–$225,000 USD or $180,000–$200,000 CAD; final offers depend on experience and expertise.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building production backend systems.
  • Deep familiarity with Python, relational stores, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure; Syndio uses GCP and Kubernetes.
  • Experience building LLM-powered systems in production, such as an agent loop, tool-calling integration, RAG, or evaluation infrastructure.
  • Design systems for operability, incorporating legal compliance, tracing, evaluations, and kill switches as part of the feature.
  • Ability to own a technical domain with light supervision, propose direction in writing, take review, ship, and carry the pager for shipped systems.
  • Strong written communication skills for design documents and cross-team pull request reviews.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on the platform side of a platform/product relationship.
  • Experience with SSE or streaming systems.
  • Experience in compliance-adjacent engineering, such as data minimization or auditability.
  • Prior Staff-level scope.

Responsibilities

  • Own and develop core syndi-api runtime surfaces, including the agent loop, tool execution and registry, memory, and context management.
  • Grow the evaluation system, including offline gates and online detector and judge evaluations written onto production traces.
  • Operate the platform in production, including observability, incident response, and reliability for an agent experience used by customers.
  • Review product teams’ tool wrappers and evaluations, and evolve the GET /tools registry and drift-detection contract.
  • Clarify, design, and implement compliance and legal requirements for Syndi.
  • Propose technical direction in writing, produce clear API specifications, participate in review, ship systems, and take responsibility for operating what is shipped.
  • Work with product teams on integrations, from API design through evaluation sign-off.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation, with a targeted annual salary of $205,000–$225,000 USD or $180,000–$200,000 CAD.
  • Syndio equity.
  • Flexible vacation policy, with up to 20 days of PTO in Canada.
  • Paid sick and safe time, compassion leave, and voting leave.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage; Syndio pays 90% of employee premiums and 50% for dependents.
  • Life insurance and disability coverage, with Syndio covering the full premium.
