About The Position

The Staff Software Engineer will own and advance the technology that delivers next-generation infotainment software into vehicles. The role drives the architecture, implementation, and operational excellence of the build, test, release, and developer productivity ecosystem for reliable software delivery at scale. It calls for end-to-end ownership, strong architectural judgment, and the ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct authority. The engineer partners with engineering, release management, quality, infrastructure, and program stakeholders to modernize CI/CD, improve developer velocity, strengthen observability, and raise the quality and reliability of NextGen infotainment software delivery. The role is hybrid, with reporting to Austin, Texas; Mountain View, California; Warren, Michigan; or Seattle, Washington at least three times per week. Regular travel of 25–50% is required. Relocation benefits may be available to qualifying candidates. The stated salary range is $189,300–$290,700, with actual base salary depending on position-related factors. An incentive pay program may provide payouts based on company, job-level, and individual performance. Subject to a successful motor vehicle report review, the employee may be eligible for GM’s company vehicle evaluation program; participants must purchase or lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years, subject to limited exceptions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, DevOps, build engineering, platform engineering, or release engineering at staff-level scope.
  • Experience leading large, multi-team technical initiatives from design through production.
  • Strong experience designing and operating scalable CI/CD systems and developer platforms, such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI.
  • Experience with embedded Linux build systems, cross-compilation environments, or complex platform build pipelines.
  • Strong programming or scripting skills in Python, Bash, Groovy, or similar languages.
  • Cloud and container experience, including Docker, Kubernetes, and at least one major cloud.
  • Hands-on observability experience with metrics, logging, tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
  • Ability to mentor, influence architecture, and execute in a matrixed organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in automotive, embedded systems, infotainment, Android Automotive, Linux IVI, QNX, or related domains.
  • Experience with Yocto/OpenEmbedded and ARM-based embedded platforms.
  • Experience with distributed build systems, remote build execution, large-scale build caching, or internal developer platforms and engineering productivity solutions.
  • Familiarity with artifact repositories, static analysis, code quality, and security scanning tools such as Artifactory and SonarQube.
  • Experience with observability and delivery tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana in large multi-repository or multi-team release programs.
  • Experience applying AI/ML to DevOps workflows, such as predictive build failures, intelligent test selection, or anomaly detection, or familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools.

Responsibilities

  • Define technical strategy and architecture for DevOps, CI/CD, and build platforms supporting NextGen infotainment across multiple vehicle programs.
  • Design and optimize scalable CI/CD pipelines for embedded Linux (Yocto) builds, including orchestration, test automation, artifact management, release workflows, distributed builds, and caching.
  • Automate release processes, including branching, versioning, artifact promotion, quality gates, and compliance checks.
  • Build self-service platforms, GitHub automation, and dashboards to reduce manual effort and accelerate developer feedback.
  • Drive end-to-end observability and operational excellence.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives from concept through production.
  • Mentor engineers, influence technical direction, and raise engineering standards through design reviews, process improvement, and hiring.

Benefits

  • Incentive pay program with potential payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
  • Potential eligibility for a company vehicle evaluation program, subject to a successful motor vehicle report review and program conditions.
  • Relocation benefits may be available to candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM employee benefits and Total Rewards resources are referenced, but specific benefits are not listed.
