Staff Software Engineer - Platform Integration, Robot Software

Wayve•Sunnyvale, CA
•$275,000 - $300,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Wayve’s Robot Software Platform Integration team brings together the software and interfaces that enable its AI Driver to operate on new development platforms. The team owns early vehicle software integration, drive-by-wire and vehicle-facing software drivers, and works across software, hardware, controls and operations to bring up new vehicle variants, improve reliability, and establish repeatable validation and handover processes. The Staff Software Engineer brings deep experience in software, hardware, robotics and autonomous vehicle integration. The role leads integration architecture, mentors engineers, resolves complex technical challenges, and partners with the Engineering Manager on the technical roadmap. It also works with technical leads across Robot Software on system design and integration decisions, while remaining hands-on with software development and vehicle bring-up. The work spans integration architecture for vehicle programmes; reusable vehicle-facing components; Linux-based robotic and automotive platforms; sensors and vehicle communication and control interfaces; and integration across automotive compute platforms. It also includes validation strategies, diagnostics and tooling. Wayve operates a hybrid working model combining in-person collaboration at dedicated offices with remote work. The role may involve hands-on work in vehicle workshops and labs.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience integrating autonomous vehicles or similarly complex robotic systems, with practical understanding of interactions among software, compute, sensors, networks and actuators.
  • Experience leading architecture and delivery for complex integration work and making technical decisions across software and hardware boundaries.
  • Strong software-development skills in C++, Rust or comparable systems languages.
  • Experience delivering production-quality software on Linux-based robotic, embedded or automotive platforms.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into clear designs, interfaces and implementation plans.
  • Track record of resolving difficult system-level problems through systematic investigation and on-target testing, with strong understanding of underlying technology.
  • Understanding of ROS2 or similar middleware, distributed-system integration and practical vehicle bring-up.
  • Experience raising a team’s technical capability through mentoring, design reviews and engineering standards.
  • Ability to influence technical decisions across teams and work with engineering management to connect architecture, delivery priorities and long-term investment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience delivering integrations across multiple vehicle or compute platforms.
  • Experience working with OEMs or hardware suppliers.
  • Experience developing reusable integration frameworks.
  • Experience with drive-by-wire, HiL testing, functional safety or fleet reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead integration architecture and author design documents defining interfaces, evaluating trade-offs and guiding implementation across vehicle programmes.
  • Partner with the Engineering Manager to shape the technical roadmap, balancing programme delivery with architecture, tooling and maintainability improvements.
  • Diagnose and unblock complex integration challenges across application software, middleware, operating systems, networks and hardware.
  • Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews and hands-on debugging.
  • Represent Platform Integration in technical discussions across Robot Software and align with technical leads on interfaces, dependencies and ownership.
  • Develop and review production software, establishing patterns that reduce bespoke integration work and improve reuse.
  • Lead targeted bench, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) and vehicle investigations to resolve uncertainty or validate designs.
  • Use lessons from bring-up and field issues to improve diagnostics, integration practices, documentation and validation.

Benefits

  • Meaningful equity.
  • Relocation support and visa sponsorship where applicable.
  • Hybrid working and core hours.
  • Learning and development budgets, including support for training and conferences.
  • Comprehensive benefits including health insurance, dental, enhanced maternity and paternity leave, retirement or pension where applicable, access to therapists, wellbeing partnerships and team socials.
  • Salaries benchmarked against the market annually.
