About The Position

LineVision is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its LineRate team to set the architecture and technical strategy for systems that transform large-scale time-series sensor data into ratings used by utility customers. The role spans the ratings generation library and microservice, a customer-deployable product, weather modeling tools, and front-end visualizations. The engineer will establish coherent technical direction across these systems, partner with Data Science to productionize research, collaborate with UI/UX and Product on APIs and data contracts, and lead complex initiatives across teams. The role also includes mentoring engineers and raising the team's technical capabilities. Participation in a compensated rotational on-call schedule is a condition of employment. In the first three months, the engineer is expected to learn how the core systems connect, make a meaningful contribution, build cross-functional relationships, and deliver an assessment of architecture risks and opportunities. Within six months, they are expected to lead a multi-codebase or multi-team initiative, propose an improvement to time-series data storage or retrieval, and influence roadmap discussions. Within the first year, they should become a recognized technical authority for at least one core codebase, lead a cross-functional initiative through delivery, coach multiple engineers, and establish a team practice or program. The position is full-time and hybrid, with 2–4 days per week in person at LineVision's Boston, Massachusetts headquarters. It reports to the Senior Software Engineering Manager.

Requirements

  • Expert proficiency in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, with strong experience in React.
  • Proven experience designing and evolving systems using at least one relational database and one NoSQL database.
  • Experience deploying and operating production systems on a major cloud platform.
  • Track record of setting architecture across the stack, from data storage through APIs to UI.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple engineers or teams and mentoring other engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Rust.
  • Experience designing large-scale time-series data systems.
  • Background working closely with data science or applied science teams to productionize research code.
  • Experience building engineering practices or programs that scaled beyond one's own team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain technical architecture for the ratings generation library and microservice, customer-deployable product, weather modeling tools, and front-end visualizations.
  • Partner with Data Science to move research code into reliable, scalable production services and develop reusable frameworks to accelerate this work.
  • Work with UI/UX and Product to design APIs and data contracts that provide the right data at the right time.
  • Design storage and retrieval strategies for large-scale time-series data, balancing cost, latency, and accuracy.
  • Lead complex, multi-team technical initiatives from scoping through delivery and guide teams through execution.
  • Influence roadmap priorities with Product and Engineering leadership, considering customer benefit, implementation time, and long-term technical cost.
  • Coach engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing, and build programs that grow the team's technical capability.
  • Participate in a compensated rotational on-call schedule.
  • Assess current architecture and rank technical risks and opportunities by customer impact.
  • Become a technical authority for at least one core codebase and lead cross-functional initiatives through delivery.

Benefits

  • Trust-based paid time off.
  • Flexible hybrid work schedule.
