Staff Software Engineer | Platform Team
About The Position
Machinify is a leading healthcare intelligence company seeking a skilled Staff Platform Engineer. The Platform team builds the foundation for all engineers at Machinify, covering developer tooling, shared standards, observability, resilience engineering, core product server systems, and a Rust framework. This role involves leading AI tool adoption across the company and offers significant technical influence without direct people management. The team tackles complex challenges, including scaling and rethinking data layers in existing Scala systems, and improving architectural visibility by addressing implementation issues. Machinify emphasizes emotional safety, empathy, owning problems, building quality software, and operating in a high-trust, high-autonomy environment.
Requirements
- Systems thinking: Ability to see how pieces connect and reason about the whole system when something breaks.
- Fearless code reading: Ability to drop into a large, unfamiliar codebase, build a mental model, and figure out what needs to change.
- Empathy for users: Designing for people downstream, whether they are developers using your framework or operators reading your error messages.
- Testing discipline: Thoroughly testing software.
- Comfort with ambiguity: Being energized by complex problems that lack clear specifications.
- Proficiency in JVM ecosystem (Java, Scala)
- Python
- SQL and data processing (Spark or similar)
- Distributed systems design
- Observability and resilience engineering
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Rust highly desired
Responsibilities
- Dig into inherited Scala systems to find where the real problems are, separate symptoms from causes, and make them scale
- Redesign the data layer our ML and AI products depend on
- Build out a Rust framework that lets teams ship correct, performant services without reinventing fundamentals
- Improve observability and resilience across the platform so we find problems before our customers do
- Shape developer tooling and engineering standards
- Drive AI tool adoption across the company, figuring out what actually helps engineers work better
- Work across the full stack: JVM (Java/Scala), Rust, Python, SQL, and Spark
