Staff Software Engineer- Tax Credits
About The Position
Gusto is seeking a Staff Engineer, Tax Credits who relishes complex and ambiguous problems, is obsessed with creating simple, beautiful, and enjoyable user experiences, and has a strong bias for action to drive complex and highly visible projects. This role operates at the intersection of product excellence, customer empathy, business strategy, and artificial intelligence. The Tax Credits team is an emerging app within the Gusto platform focused on creating a magical experience for customers to take advantage of available Tax Credits and grants in a scalable, approachable, and opinionated way. The team aims to empower and delight customers by providing "magical just-in-time moments" for tax credits, creating a self-serve system for employers to explore their potential, and simplifying the tax credit discovery journey. This role involves cross-functional collaboration to ensure solutions address varied customer needs and product team requirements, with strong executive support and plans for growth.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience
- Experience building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain; passion for creating memorable experiences for customers
- Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact at scale
- Experience with large scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and a strong sense of ownership over all aspects of your product area
- Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
- Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test Gusto core products
- Mentor other engineers to help solve some of the hardest technical problems out there in very complex domains and at a large scale
- Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world
- Collaborate with our Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch daily
