Staff Software Engineer, Platform (DevEx)

About The Position

ServiceTitan is building the Developer Platform for enterprise-scale SaaS: a shared engineering ecosystem that powers seamless, high-velocity software delivery across our entire product footprint. Our DevX platform is the runtime, framework, build, deployment, guardrail, and telemetry layer that lets hundreds of engineers ship code safely, observably, and at enterprise scale. We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to be the deepest technical voice on our DevX platform team. This is an individual-contributor role with outsized scope: you'll set technical direction, make architecture calls that other engineers build against, and personally ship the hardest, highest-leverage parts of the platform. You won't manage people, but you'll be expected to lead through influence — raising the technical bar for engineers and managers alike. We need someone with deep production scars, strong systems intuition, and the judgment to know when to go deep on a gnarly problem versus when to unblock the team and move on. You should be comfortable being the technical backstop for a small, senior-heavy team and the person other engineers (and their managers) come to when something is architecturally ambiguous or on fire.

Requirements

  • 10-15+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of technical leadership on platform, infrastructure, or DevX systems at scale.
  • Deep, current hands-on ability — actively writing code, reviewing designs, and debugging production systems, not principally directing others' work.
  • Experience owning (not just contributing to) CI/CD pipelines, build systems, internal developer portals, or test automation platforms in production, at meaningful engineering-org scale.
  • Strong command of modern developer tool architecture: containerization (Kubernetes/Docker), orchestration, remote caching, and cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP) — including the tradeoffs behind each.
  • Deep expertise in environment safety: Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), secure secrets management, and automated compliance gates, with experience designing these systems rather than just using them.
  • Fluency with velocity metrics (DORA: cycle time, lead time for changes, deployment frequency) as design inputs, not just dashboards.
  • Demonstrated ability to turn ambiguous, org-level strategy into a technical roadmap without needing management authority to drive it.
  • A track record of raising the technical bar for teams they're not formally managing — through review, mentorship, and design leadership.
  • Hands-on experience building with or on top of coding agent runtimes (e.g., Codex, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) — not just using them as an end user, but integrating or extending them as platform infrastructure.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing or operating internal developer platforms, custom build networks, or internal control planes at multi-hundred-engineer scale.
  • Experience with compliance-sensitive workflows, change management systems, audit trails, or policy engines.
  • Background in SaaS or cloud-native infrastructure where software delivery speed directly impacts business outcomes.
  • Prior experience as a technical lead or architect on a platform team without direct reports.
  • Experience evaluating or building guardrails (sandboxing, permissions, eval harnesses) for autonomous or semi-autonomous coding agents in a real engineering org.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for the platform: define architecture, platform contracts (service templates, environment configs, pipeline steps, deployment manifests), and long-term design tradeoffs.
  • Personally design and build the highest-leverage, highest-ambiguity pieces of the platform — the parts too risky or too foundational to hand off.
  • Review designs and code across the team; be the escalation point when a technical decision needs a final call.
  • Debug the hardest production issues in the platform: pipeline failures, build system regressions, infrastructure drift, flaky test root causes.
  • Partner directly with Product, Security, SRE, and domain engineering leads to align the platform roadmap with real usage patterns and constraints.
  • Mentor and level up engineers and EMs on the team through code review, design review, and pairing — without formal management authority.
  • Translate ambiguous, org-wide DevX strategy into a concrete technical roadmap that others can execute against.
  • Represent the platform in cross-functional architecture reviews and act as a technical reference for teams building on top of it.
  • Own the technical design of AI-assisted developer tooling and coding agent runtime infrastructure — evaluating, integrating, and hardening agentic coding tools for production use across R&D.
