SamsaraRemote - US, CO
$162,400 - $290,000Remote

About The Position

Samsara is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Maps team. This role will focus on building the shared geospatial platform that underpins nearly all of Samsara's products, including sourcing, ingesting, enriching, and serving map data. The engineer will work across the geospatial stack, developing data ingestion and processing pipelines, modeling and serving map data, improving map matching and routing foundations, and creating reusable spatial APIs. The systems built will serve as foundational infrastructure for various teams across the company. This is a remote position open to candidates based in the US.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
  • Strong programming and design fundamentals
  • 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
  • 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, and geospatial data validation
  • Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems, including GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and OSM PBF; experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving these datasets
  • Comfort working in ambiguity and getting teams aligned without needing formal authority

Responsibilities

  • Shape the technical direction of the Maps teams
  • Build geospatial systems and integrations that support foundational features across most Samsara products.
  • Scale our offerings to continue to support storage, query and computational load of the real-time features dependent on them
  • Consolidate existing team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings.
  • Build agentic solutions that allow our customers to self-serve the data they want to see how they want to see it.
  • Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
  • Partner with engineering leadership on the bets worth making, and be honest about tradeoffs
  • Represent Samsara externally when it makes sense — talks, open source, community engagement with the mapping/geospatial ecosystem
  • Live out our cultural principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, and Win as a Team

Benefits

  • Flexible, employee-led remote model
  • Professional development stipend
