Staff Software Engineer, GI

Hinge Health•San Francisco, CA
•$197,000 - $296,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Hinge Health is a leader in Digital Physical Therapy, expanding into new areas of care. With the launch of its Migraine Care Program and the planned acquisition of Cylinder Health, Hinge Health is building a new team to launch a Gastrointestinal (GI) Care Program. This program aims to provide digital care for individuals with GI conditions, leveraging Cylinder's expertise and Hinge Health's AI-powered care model. The Staff Software Engineer for GI will be instrumental in shaping this end-to-end digital care experience, leading experiments, tackling technical challenges, and developing a scalable product. Staff engineers at Hinge Health are senior technical contributors who lead through code, technical judgment, and influence, setting direction for critical systems, contributing to production code, and mentoring other engineers without moving into people management. This role involves close collaboration with senior leadership and cross-functional teams in San Francisco, Montreal, and Bangalore.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 4+ years of practical software engineering experience, including building and shipping user-facing applications in production.
  • A minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or foreign equivalent).
  • 2+ years of hands-on React Native experience building mobile applications at scale.
  • 0->1 Builder: Track record of building brand new products from scratch.
  • Talent magnet: Recognized as a leader and other people want to work with.
  • AI-Driven development: Experience using the latest AI software development techniques (ex: teams of AI Agents) and continuously looking for new AI techniques that can improve productivity.
  • Move fast, know how to balance innovation vs reuse, and deliver clear business results.
  • Hands-on engineer: Reading and writing code across the tech stack (e.g., React Native, BFF/full-stack web, GraphQL, AI Agents, Computer Vision, Medical Device Integration, etc), and using that fluency to coach, review, and set technical direction.
  • Experiment-driven operator: Thinking in terms of hypotheses, sample sizes, and decision rules, and ability to run a dense A/B experimentation roadmap without sacrificing quality.
  • Team mentor and collaborator: Enjoy leveling up a strong but more junior team through pairing, code reviews, design discussions, and clear written communication.
  • Owner mindset: Thinking in terms of systems and business impact, not just tickets—comfortable taking a problem from idea through launch, measurement, and iteration.
  • Inclusive team builder: Creating clear expectations, giving direct feedback, and fostering a culture where engineers can do the best work of their careers.

Nice To Haves

  • Technologies: Experience building in large React Native codebases, TypeScript/Node.js & Go backends, GraphQL, AWS services (e.g., Lambda, SQS, SNS, SageMaker), tooling for client performance, render optimization, devops and app architecture patterns.
  • Product Integration mindset: History operating a product surface that integrates across multiple platforms owned by different teams.
  • Track record of running experiments (e.g., A/B tests or multivariate tests) on core product surfaces and using results to drive roadmap decisions.
  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript/JavaScript, React Native, and modern mobile development tooling; familiarity with backend services (e.g., Node/TypeScript, GraphQL, or similar) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow other engineers through code reviews, design collaboration, and technical guidance.
  • Comfort collaborating with product, design, and data/analytics partners to define metrics, interpret results, and refine experiences.
  • Experience developing consumer-facing apps used by millions/billions of users.
  • Regulated environments: Experience working within healthcare (HIPAA) or other highly regulated domains involving sensitive member data.

Responsibilities

  • Help define the GI product line from scratch.
  • Build strong partnerships with Product, Design, and Marketing to align on the strategy, experimentation roadmap, and success metrics.
  • Lead the technical roadmap development for the new GI product line spanning AI systems, UX interfaces, business logic middletier, hardware integration and where to loop in the board-certified clinician for in-person support to members.
  • Develop prototypes and proof-of-concepts for the hardest parts of the new product line.
  • Build the GI product as a minimum lovable product (MLP) delivering a significant & measurable health improvement for members.
  • Mentor and pair with engineers on the pod, helping them grow in engineering best practices, code quality, and experimentation mindset.
  • Create engineering best practices for CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and client performance across the entire stack.
  • Personally develop the hardest, most challenging software elements in the product roadmap.
  • Launch the new product and work on iterations to adapt it using real member feedback post-launch.
  • Drive cross-team initiatives to improve the end-to-end journey for GI end users.
  • Continuously raise engineering standards on the pod (testing, observability, reliability, accessibility, performance) and help scale the team’s impact as the product and membership grow.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Help with gender-affirming care.
  • Tools for family and fertility planning.
  • Travel reimbursements if healthcare isn’t available where you live.
  • Traditional or Roth 401k retirement plan options with a 2% company match.
