About The Position

The Medi-Cal Eligibility Division (MCED), Policy Development Branch, Application and Renewal Section, Renewal Unit is responsible for a variety of assignments related to the design and implementation of several significant high profile projects and Medi-Cal Programs, including but not limited to the transitions between the Insurance Affordability Programs, member annual renewals, reporting of changes, and retroactive Medi-Cal eligibility. Under general direction of the Staff Service Manager II (SSM II), the Staff Services Manager I (SSM I) is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and management of a unit of staff comprised of up to five analysts. In addition, the SSM I is responsible to perform and supervise a wide variety of administrative and analytical assignments including Budget Change Proposals and Legislation and Regulations. The SSM I works with Branch experts on eligibility criteria for Medi-Cal programs and other staff from throughout the Medi-Cal program, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, County Welfare Directors Association, Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Legal Staff, Covered California, the California Healthcare Eligibility, Enrollment, and Retention System, the California Statewide Automated Welfare System, California Department of Social Services, and the Social Security Administration in the creation of policies, procedures, and systems to implement and maintain a variety of Medi-Cal Programs. The SSM I is required to develop extensive knowledge of the various programs in order to train and supervise the staff, represent the program at meetings and to the public, and write, review and edit documents created within the Branch that provide procedures and policy guidance to counties, departmental management and the public. Travel, including over night stays, may be required five percent or less of the time. This classification is advertised as a Staff Services Manager I (4800) and will be converted to the Supervisor I (4800) classification on January 1, 2026.
