About The Position

Machinify is hiring a Staff or Senior Backend Engineer for its Right Payer Solutions team, covering the Subrogation and Coordination of Benefits (COB) product lines. This joint posting places the selected candidate on one of the two teams based on their background and team needs. The engineer will set backend technical direction and design, build, and operate scalable, reliable cloud-native services and distributed systems on AWS, GCP, or Azure. The role is hands-on product engineering focused on production services and features, not DevOps, Platform, or SRE work. Machinify develops in Rust and welcomes experienced Java, Go, or Scala engineers who are willing to adopt Rust. The role involves partnering across product, engineering, ML/data science, QA, and UX; influencing product direction; working directly with customers; and owning systems that affect healthcare payment decisions and millions of lives. The engineer will also use AI coding agents as part of delivery, directing and reviewing their output under structured human oversight, and help grow the team's engineering practices and Rust adoption.

Requirements

At least 10 years of backend engineering experience for Staff level, or at least 6 years for Senior level; full-stack experience is a plus.
Strong application design and system architecture experience across complex backend systems.
Ability to author technical design documents for engineering and product partners.
Substantial production experience in Rust, Java, Go, or Scala; Rust is highly desired.
Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems at scale.
Production experience with containers and orchestration, such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Ownership of CI/CD pipelines for the candidate's own services, including building them.
Production experience with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Strong SQL and relational database skills, with familiarity across NoSQL and caching layers.
Hands-on production experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows.
Ability to read complex code, own code quality, and continually improve it.
Strong cross-functional collaboration with engineering, product management, ML/data science, and leadership.
Pragmatic approach, strong systems instincts, and ability to find root causes rather than symptoms.
Comfort working with complexity and defining a path forward.
BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

Technical leadership on Rust best practices, including idioms, safety, and performance, as adoption scales across greenfield projects.
Healthcare, payer, or insurance domain experience, including claims or payment-integrity workflows.
Experience shipping ML/AI-driven features in production and earning business trust in them.

Responsibilities

Set the architecture and technical direction for backend systems on the assigned product line.
