About The Position

Seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a Senior Staff Scientist position in a cancer research laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina. Current work in the laboratory is centered on lipid metabolism in relation to hypoxia and drug resistance in prostate cancer. This is a non-tenure track position, with renewal dependent on continued availability of extramural funding. Salary range is commensurate with experience.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. with considerable experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology.
  • Experience in utilizing in vivo models of prostate cancer and surgical techniques.
  • Strong track record in publishing high impact research.
  • History of training and oversight of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other research staff.
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an independent research project in consultation with the PI, including design and implementation of in vitro experiments to assess lipid alterations that impact drug sensitivity.
  • Review current scientific literature, maintain meticulous laboratory records, and present these results to PI in individual and group meetings.
  • Draft and publish results in leading scientific journals and work closely with PI to develop research grant proposals.
  • Perform in vitro and in vivo testing of novel inhibitors identified and developed by the lab and its collaborators, including orthotopic models of prostate cancer and bone orthotopic models of metastasis.
  • Conduct pK studies, urological surgeries in mice, and all modalities of drug delivery, including intraperitoneal, oral gavage, retro-orbital, and tail vein injections, among others, as well as necropsy and tissue collection from primary and distant organs.
  • Train and supervise technical staff, graduate students, and other laboratory personnel, including mentoring students.
  • Oversee equipment, develop written protocols of experimental techniques, and advise and assist junior members of the laboratory on experimental approaches.
  • Manage daily lab needs, activity, and budgeting, including maintaining databases of laboratory reagents and cell lines, and ordering supplies.
