Stamford Health is hiring a Fulltime PACU Staff RN for the PACU! This position is Fulltime, rotating days, with RESTRICTED ON CALL REQUIREMENT. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Valid license as Registered Nurse in Connecticut.
  • BLS and ACLS REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 2 years previous experience in either a hospital or ambulatory surgical center required.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN strongly preferred.
  • PALS certification within the first year of hire.
  • ICU experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with adult and pediatric clinical assessments preferred.
  • Phlebotomy and EKG experience.
  • Peri-anesthesia certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • A clinically competent, registered, professional nurse who assumes responsibility and accountability for the preoperative, phase 1 and phase 2 post anesthesia patient and their families in collaboration with all other members of the health care team through the nursing process and in conjunction with the policies and procedures of Stamford Health System.
  • Restricted “on call” duties include response time within 30 minutes of activation.
  • 12 hour shifts, rotating between 6am start and 11pm closing times, including weekend hours.
  • Critical care experience required.
  • Respects and protects the patient’s rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patient’s best interests with full consideration of their legal rights.
  • The RN Verifies patient information by using established patient identifiers.
  • Practices the 5 Rights to patient safety when administering medications, blood or blood products and treatments. (Right patient, Right medication, Right route, Right dose, Right time).
  • Delivers patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation.
  • Demonstrates competency in IV insertion and removal of.
  • Active participation in any “Time Out” performed for procedures.
  • Maintain patent airway, including adult and pediatric patients.
  • Manages monitoring and respiratory equipment, IV lines, tubes, drains and catheters.
  • Comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants and other hazardous substances.
  • Uses strong nursing judgement in determining appropriate nursing action and exhibits control in emergency situations.
  • Documents and reports to MD pertinent information, observations, and all aspects of patient care clearly, concisely and in a timely manner.
  • Assists with the development and clinical precepting of students and new employees.
  • Maintains equipment and utilizes supplies in a safe, cost-effective manner.
  • Complies with hospital attendance policy and department staffing policy and rotations.
  • Adhere to hospital and department specific dress code policy.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures and adheres to external agency requirements.
  • Completes required continuing education and training, including department specific requirements.
  • Takes responsibility for own professional development.
  • Adhere to aseptic practices to protect patients from injury, minimize wound contamination and reduce patient risk for surgical site infection.
  • Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with all members of the healthcare team and related departments to provide accurate information about the perioperative care of the patients.
  • Displays a positive attitude and works to achieve an environment of respect, accountability, teamwork, integrity, and compassion.
  • Does not support or take part in disruptive or negative behavior.
  • Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers, and other team members.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and procedures and standards of care, which contribute to the achievement of the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Participates in, Professional Governance boards and activities at the unit, service line, and organizational level.
  • Participate in Quality improvement initiatives, nursing research and innovation, and/or evidence-based practice.
  • It is the obligation of Professional Nurses to be involved in governance to enhance nursing practice, drive excellence and innovation, and improve outcomes projects.
  • Provides safe patient care by verifying patient identification and assuring the presence of the necessary documents, laboratory tests, consents, equipment, and radiology images.
  • The RN will verify and review with the patient their medical / surgical history, including medication reconciliation, MDRO risk and other screenings as indicated to ensure patient readiness prior to surgery.

  • Evaluates patient’s readiness for discharge from unit and hospital.
  • Cross trains and rotates to other clinical areas with the Perioperative Service line as needed
