Medical-surgical nurses deliver care in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory, sensitive, and culturally competent manner. They interact with, and contribute to, the professional development of peers and other health care providers as colleagues. Medical-surgical nurses communicate effectively with clients, families, and other health care professionals. They collaborate with the client, family members, significant others, and health care providers in providing care. Medical-surgical nurses use leadership skills to enhance client outcomes and foster a healthy work environment within the practice setting and profession. Medical-surgical nurses acquire and maintain current knowledge in nursing practice, pursuing knowledge to enhance nursing expertise and advance the profession. They use research findings in practice. The Medical/Pediatric Nurse contributes to quality nursing practice, ensuring that nursing practice is safe, effective, efficient, equitable, timely and patient-centered. The Medical/Pediatric Nurse evaluates his/her own and other's nursing practice in accordance with professional practice standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies and contributes to the professional development of peers or other health care providers as colleagues.
