The Staff RN uses the nursing process to deliver nursing care to a given patient care population as it relates to the care setting. Nursing care is based on the interpretation and execution of the medical and nursing plan of treatment utilizing established procedures, standards, and protocols of individuals within the assigned work shift. The Staff RN provides nursing care to the population served in the unit. Core Competencies include adhering to infection prevention guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards of practice to deliver safe and optimal care. This involves assessing patient history, physiological, and psychosocial status, communicating with the patient, family, medical staff, and others during the continuum of care, and complying with Joint Commission’s national patient safety goals. The role also involves complying with organizational quality dashboard/benchmarking goals, interpreting common variables affecting patient care and following reporting processes, and maintaining regulatory compliance consistent with quality standards and ethical obligations of the profession. Participation in activities aligned with the Magnet Model, organizational activities, and Peer Review is expected. The Staff RN will participate in professional development activities and perform as a preceptor in an active and engaged manner. Providing age-specific individualized care that supports protection from harm and complies with patient safety-centered interventions/bundles, patient and family education throughout the care of the patient, and utilizing critical thinking to formulate and carry out a care plan according to patient needs are key responsibilities. Additionally, the role requires utilizing resources in an economical manner, safe administration of medications, and utilizing Safe Patient Handling. Department Specific Competencies include scheduling patients for procedures and organizing the schedule to accommodate contaminated cases, emergencies, and routine procedures with physician schedules. Providing information and support for patients making healthcare decisions, ensuring consent is correctly obtained and documented prior to treatment/procedure, and communicating working knowledge, function, availability, and location of all endoscopy equipment are essential. Demonstrating knowledge of anesthetic agents, continuously evaluating the patient's progress toward recovery from anesthesia, and performing portable procedures in high-stress environments (Intensive Care Units, Surgery Suite, and Emergency Room) are also part of the role. Assisting the physician with procedures and care of the GI patient, anticipating physician needs during procedures, and providing patient comfort measures prior to, during, and after procedures are crucial. Recovering patients post-procedure according to policy and procedure, transporting and moving patients using appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions, and demonstrating knowledge and practice of safe patient handling devices are required. Completing all assigned procedures in a timely manner and using time between procedures to department advantage (assisting others, clerical duties, stocking, transporting, etc.) is expected. Maintaining appropriate inventory and par levels on all supplies, ordering and restocking endoscopy rooms, carts, and the department, and monitoring and reporting patient or family complaints to the Unit Lead, intervening before issues arise and implementing service recovery strategies as needed are also key duties. Pre-cleaning endoscopic equipment upon completion, cleaning and disinfecting equipment and accessories to established policies and procedures, and using basic radiology and fluoroscopy practices and wearing appropriate protective equipment correctly are necessary. Completing required documentation in EMR and departmental log books in a timely manner, assuming the responsibility of a leadership position in the absence of the Lead RN or supervisor, and moving the patient or body part to promote surgical exposure while reducing the risk of discomfort and complications are part of the role. Finally, assuming on-call status and call back as assigned, responding within 30 minutes of receiving a call, are required.
