About The Position

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has an open position for a research staff scientist onsite at PPPL. The candidate will join a dynamic team of scientists with diverse expertise working to advance understanding and develop the science and technology of liquid metals to be used as plasma-facing components in fusion reactors. This involves developing, building and testing several different component concepts, with keen attention to the liquid metal safety. This also involves developing and testing systems to purify liquid metal streams of fuel and impurities. The successful candidate may also participate in the liquid metal component testing program in the NSTX-U device at PPPL. A U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is tackling the world’s toughest science and technology challenges using plasma, the fourth state of matter. Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience post PhD
  • Ph.D. in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field
  • Strong analytical and English communication skills are required
  • Experience with experimental fusion plasma-material boundary physics, magnetohydrodynamics, and heat transfer is required

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise with handling of liquid metals, design and develop liquid metal experimental systems, liquid metal and and interpretation of material surface science diagnostics, and numerical simulations of liquid metal MHD is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • conducting research and disseminating results in the form of talks, posters, and refereed journal articles, principally related to boundary physics with a focus on the effects of liquid metal components
  • Periodic travel to domestic and international facilities will be required
