Staff Research Associate 2 - Pediatric Nephrology (Part-Time/Limited)
About The Position
This is a Part-Time, Limited Appointment position within the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Nephrology. The role supports research focused on discovering small molecule modulators of ion transporters/channels relevant to various human diseases, including kidney diseases (kidney stones, kidney failure, hypertension), digestive disorders (diarrhea, constipation, motility disorders), pulmonary diseases (asthma, cystic fibrosis), and cardiovascular diseases (hypertension). The Staff Research Associate (SRA) will perform a range of laboratory tasks under the supervision and training of the Principal Investigator (PI).
Requirements
- BA/BS in a related science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with animal handling, genotyping, breeding, and colony maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and to assess the need for interaction with the supervising researcher.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Careful attention to detail.
- Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with cell culture techniques including primary cell cultures, maintenance of cell lines, and transfection techniques.
- Coursework experience with standard molecular and biochemical techniques including cell culture, PCR, and Western blotting.
- Master of Science Degree, including one year of experience.
Responsibilities
- Perform in vitro electrophysiology in cells and tissues using Ussing Chamber.
- Conduct cell culture, including maintaining and preparing cell lines for experiments.
- Measure ion transport in cells using fluorescence and a plate reader.
- Prepare buffers and solutions for experiments.
- Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, animal genotyping, and Western blot.
- Utilize staining techniques for tissues and cells, including immunofluorescence and light microscopy.
- Conduct animal experiments, including handling, anesthesia, injections, collection of blood, urine, and stool, colony maintenance, breeding, euthanasia, tissue harvesting, and simple surgery.
- Analyze ions, biomarkers, chemical compounds, and metabolites using ion chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
- Manage animal safety and compliance, including controlled and biological substances.
- Ensure adherence to research protocols and manage timely renewal and updating of animal protocols in coordination with the PI.
- Determine supply needs for experiments and organize their storage and use.
- Assist with material transfers and safe shipping.
- Perform shared general lab maintenance duties such as defrosting freezers, cleaning hoods, incubators, and sinks, and organizing supplies inventory.
- Attend weekly laboratory meetings unless in direct time conflict with ongoing research/experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
