Staff Platform Engineer - AI

Datavant
$220,000 - $270,000

About The Position

Datavant is seeking a Staff Platform Engineer to be a senior technical leader on a new team responsible for building the platform that enables Datavant teams to run AI agents safely and reliably. This role requires significant experience in designing and operating platforms, particularly in regulated environments where audit, identity, and policy are critical. The ideal candidate writes code daily, prioritizes shipping functional solutions, and builds enabling guardrails. They collaborate effectively, understand that platform adoption relies on making secure and governed paths the easiest, and mentor others while also seeking knowledge. The team practices compound engineering, codifying learned patterns into tooling and reusable components. The Staff Engineer will set the tempo for this process.

Requirements

  • Ten or more years as a software engineer building production platforms.
  • At least three years at Staff IC level or equivalent technical-lead seniority.
  • Deep experience designing and operating cloud-native, Kubernetes-based platforms in production.
  • Hands-on fluency with at least one mainstream LLM application stack (LangGraph, Bedrock AgentCore, or equivalent), or strong adjacent platform experience plus willingness to learn quickly.
  • Depth in workload identity and access management: service identity, short-lived credentials and token exchange, and key management (SPIFFE/SPIRE, OAuth token exchange, KMS-backed signing, or equivalent).
  • Strong written communication skills, with experience in architecture decision records and design documents.
  • Ability to operate as a peer to senior engineers and leaders outside the team.
  • Personal experience using AI tools in engineering work (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, custom MCP servers, agentic side projects) is valued.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS experience.
  • Healthcare data experience (PHI, HIPAA, BAA workflows).
  • Experience with other regulated-platform backgrounds (FedRAMP, HITRUST / HITRUST AI, NIST AI RMF, SOC 2 Type 2).

Responsibilities

  • Help shape the AI Platform's core architecture alongside senior leadership.
  • Establish the platform's technical contracts for agent registration, identity proofing, action attribution, auditing, and runtime constraints.
  • Set the technical bar for the team, mentor engineers, review work, and author design documents.
  • Design the integration of the AI Platform with other engineering teams (platform and product).
  • Operate and maintain the platform, including carrying the pager.

Benefits

  • Total rewards strategy for a high-growth, high-performance health technology company.
  • Post-offer health screenings and proof/completion of vaccinations may be required by clients.
  • Commitment to a work environment free from job discrimination.
  • Voluntary demographic questions for recruitment process improvement.
  • Commitment to working with and providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities.
