About The Position

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking an experienced Staff PCB Layout Design Engineer to join the Hardware Engineering Team in Undersea Systems in Annapolis, Maryland. The engineer will generate printed circuit board (PCB) stack-ups and layouts, draw and revise components, create bare printed wiring board (PWB) and circuit card assembly (CCA) drawings, and establish references and standard data for PCB design artifacts. The role uses computer-aided design (CAD) graphic tools, such as Mentor Graphics Xpedition, to complete critical layout data in accordance with engineering drafting practices, military specifications, and industry standards. The position involves designing PCB and flex-circuit layouts in coordination with electrical and mechanical engineers, and accounting for electrical requirements, mechanical fitment, producibility, and manufacturability. The engineer will also support component selection, fabrication and manufacturing data generation, CAD library maintenance, supplier queries, product lifecycle management reviews, engineering changes, and improvement of PCB engineering workflows. The role includes travel approximately 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available. A security clearance is not required to start, but the candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. government Secret clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field and 12 years of directly related professional experience, or a master's degree in a STEM field and 10 years of directly related experience, or a Ph.D. in a STEM field and 8 years of directly related experience; an additional 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Drafting and design experience with PCB layouts and layer stack-ups, including analog, digital, RF, and mixed-signal topologies.
  • Knowledge of industry specifications and design-for-manufacturing rules for PCB design, fabrication, and manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of PCB design rules and techniques for 2- to 20-layer PCBs, from initial prototype through production.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate and lead PCB design reviews with engineering, chief engineers, and program management.
  • Ability to interface with various departments across multiple programs.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a U.S. government Secret security clearance.

  • Advanced degree in a STEM field.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
  • Knowledge of the Mentor Graphics Xpedition CAD tool for PCB design.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-compliant designs that meet reliability and maintainability requirements.
  • Experience with electronic packaging or mechanical design for naval and oceanic applications.

Responsibilities

  • Generate PCB stack-ups and layouts; draw and revise components; create bare PWB and CCA drawings; and establish references and standard data for PCB design artifacts.
  • Layout components and route electrical conductors for complex PCBs and flex circuits.
  • Coordinate with electrical and mechanical engineers on component placement, routing, and mechanical fitment for rigid, flex, and rigid-flex assemblies.
  • Design to electrical requirements and mechanical outlines while accounting for producibility and manufacturability.
  • Calculate layer stack-ups based on industry standards, supplier capabilities, and engineering requirements.
  • Generate drawings for bare PWB and assembled CCA levels, including corresponding part lists.
  • Assist with component selection to reduce PCB supply-chain procurement risks.
  • Create and document electronic data file outputs required for fabrication and manufacturing.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical and mechanical PCB behavior to layout decisions, including impedance matching, differential pairs, strains and stresses, and component orientation.
  • Maintain and update CAD central libraries for PCB-mounted components.
  • Address technical queries from suppliers.
  • Review PCB-related documentation in Product Lifecycle Management workflows.
  • Generate and incorporate PCB engineering change notices.
