You will be working on a 23 bed geriatric psychiatry unit treating patients who are 60 years of age and older. Patients have varying degrees of mental abilities and most require at least some help with activities of daily living. Some patient need complete physical care. Common patient behaviors on this unit include agitation, physical or verbal aggression, depression, withdraw and psychosis. Due to the age of the patients, many suffer from medical problems that complicate or worsen their psychiatric condition. The average length of stay is about 12 days. This is a full time day/evenings rotating 3x12 hour shift and additional 8 hrs. bi-weekly ( 7am -11:30 pm) position with every other weekend (Sat+Sun) coverage at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Westchester Behavioral Health.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Current New York State RN license
  • BCLS certification
  • Knowledge of nursing process: social, behavioral, biological and physical science
  • Knowledge of current healthcare environment
  • Knowledge of customer service principles
  • Knowledge of effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of use of computer applications
  • Ability to analyze patient care data to deliver and evaluate care
  • New Grads must complete Nurse Residency Program

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of previous experience in inpatient Med-Surg nursing
  • Nursing Certifications

Responsibilities

  • Working on a 23 bed geriatric psychiatry unit treating patients who are 60 years of age and older.
  • Providing care to patients with varying degrees of mental abilities, many requiring assistance with activities of daily living, and some needing complete physical care.
  • Managing common patient behaviors such as agitation, physical or verbal aggression, depression, withdrawal, and psychosis.
  • Addressing medical problems that complicate or worsen psychiatric conditions in geriatric patients.
  • Delivering and evaluating patient care using the nursing process.
