About The Position

UTHealth Houston’s Behavioral Sciences Campus, the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the nation, is hiring Staff Nurse II Behavioral Sciences Campus positions to work 8-hour (Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm), 40-hour workweek shifts. There will be one (1) 8-hour nurse/unit to work along side the team. Please note the Older Adult and Competency Restoration Units are excluded from this shift option. Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required
  • Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by American Red Cross or American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing school with one year nursing experience required
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing school with three years of nursing experience required
  • Nursing Diploma (3 year program) with two years of nursing experience required
  • ADN with two years of experience at HCPC as a Staff Nurse I required
  • Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients' medical and psychiatric needs and provides professional nursing care in response to this assessment.
  • Directs and supervises the delivery of care by other nursing team members (LVNs and Psychiatric Technicians) in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
  • Assesses patient needs, plans and implements patient care activities and evaluates the patient's response to the treatment.
  • Assists patient and families in discharge planning, including instructions concerning medications, safety issues post-discharge, home care, potential problems and appropriate follow-up for additional support needed.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled team conferences and collaborates with the related health care providers in treatment, discharge planning and provisions of care.
  • Functions as the liaison between patients and physicians, other multidisciplinary team members and community agencies/resources.
  • Documents patient care and outcomes per hospital policy and accrediting agencies.
  • Administers medication and other therapeutic interventions, as ordered by the physician.
  • Makes decisions based on experience and training as to whether emergency situation exists and responds to emergency situations. May administer CPR and/or other first aid measures.
  • Remains abreast of developments in the field of nursing by attending seminars and workshops, communicating with peers and reading pertinent literature.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
