About The Position

The UI Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) is seeking a Staff Nurse to assess nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice of General Cardiology patients within the UI Heart and Vascular Center (Main Campus, Iowa River Landing and/or Outreach Sites). Provide leadership to members of the nursing team to maintain patient care standards. Scheduled hours will be between 7:00AM and 6:00PM, Monday through Friday. Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • 1 year experience providing direct nursing care in an Outpatient Cardiovascular Clinic, Adult Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Adult Electrophysiology Lab, Telemetry Unit, Cardiology Unit, Cardiovascular ICU and/or ER within past 6 months.
  • Demonstrated ability to professionally interact with patients/families, nursing staff and other multi-disciplinary team members required.
  • Ability to work autonomously in high-volume ambulatory setting with limited supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Current Iowa driver’s license plus ability to meet UI Fleet Services safety standards.
  • Current certification in BLS required by start date.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa required by start date.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years’ experience providing direct nursing care in an Outpatient Cardiovascular Clinic, Adult Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Adult Electrophysiology Lab, Telemetry Unit, Cardiology Unit, Cardiovascular ICU and/or ER within past 6 months.
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desired.
  • Current job-related professional certification.
  • Previous EPIC experience.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Function as clinical staff nurse within the UI Heart and Vascular (HVC) outpatient/ambulatory team.
  • Responsible for patient intake and vital sign monitoring, current medications and allergies charting, suture removal, wound dressings, etc.
  • Collaborate with other services to schedule and coordinate additional testing for diagnosis or medical clearance.
  • Apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assess patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Coordinate the continuum of care across settings in collaborative manner.
  • Develop patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Implement patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Document/report interventions and patient/family response.
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Follows universal precautions.
  • Maintain skills/competency related to special equipment, medications, and procedures common to the patient population of the unit/division.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of computer applications.
  • Serve as clinical preceptor to new nursing and/or agency staff as directed by the Nursing Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Provide clinical care/cross-coverage to all HVC locations (main campus, Iowa River Landing and/or outreach sites) as needed/requested.
  • Utilize, adhere and support departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Positively collaborate and coordinate the continuum of care within a multi-disciplinary team and across divisions/units. Provide effective communication/counsel patient, caregiver and/or family member as needed.
  • Serve as clinical preceptor to new and/or agency nursing staff.
  • Demonstrate acceptance of responsibility; pride in work performed; flexibility in acceptance of assignments while consistently maintaining professional behavior and appearance.
