Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills are required.
  • A minimum of one year RN telemetry experience or one year of RN post-surgical step-down experience is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • Current CPR and ACLS certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
  • EKG interpretation knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients' nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice.
  • Provide leadership to members of the nursing team in order to maintain patient care standards.
  • Incorporate scientific, behavioral and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice.
  • Provide patient care and education in Phase I, II, III and Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) patients population in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Assess patient risk factors that are modifiable and demonstrate ability to offer support and strategies to aid patients in successful lifestyle changes.
  • Understand and utilize contemporary theories of health behavior change in helping patients identify learning and lifestyle modification goals.
  • Responsible for telemetry monitoring and blood pressure measurement and oxygen saturation when indicated.
  • Assess patients pre, during and post exercise, making appropriate referrals and/or recommendations to the patient, other staff, and Medical Director/Supervising Physician.
  • Immediately report any new, changing and/or significant patient conditions (dysrhythmias, abnormal blood pressure responses, change in patient status, etc.) to the physician supervising the program.
  • Utilize, adhere and support departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assess patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Collaboratively coordinate the continuum of care across settings.
  • Develop patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Implement patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses.
  • Document/report interventions and patient/family response.
  • Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care.
  • Implement nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Follow universal precautions.
  • Implement emergency care procedures in potential or actual emergencies according to departmental policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain skills/competency related to special equipment, medications, and procedures common to the patient population of the unit/division.
  • Evaluate patient's response to multidisciplinary care.
  • Use evaluation data to revise and implement change.
  • Assume accountability for the provision of care for patients.
  • Assume responsibility for care provided by self and other staff members under the nurse's direction.
  • Evaluate the quality of nursing care provided by other staff members.
  • Participate as a member of the health care team utilizing effective communication skills.
  • Participate in the development of unit, division, department and hospital policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Contribute to the solutions of staffing issues.
  • Contribute to cost containment strategies in unit.
  • Participate in projects/committees for enhanced functioning of the unit and support unit level decision-making.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of an interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Participate in ongoing strategic planning process.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of computer applications.
  • Perform other projects or tasks as assigned.
  • Develop and implement patient/family teaching plan based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient.
  • Evaluate and document effectiveness of patient/family teaching.
  • Revise plan of care.
  • Participate in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education of nursing personnel, as directed by the Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Participate in formal and informal teaching with health care students.
  • Serve as clinical teaching assistant for senior level nursing students as directed by the Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Participate in research utilization activities.
  • Integrate research findings into practice.
  • Apply quality improvement principals to improve patient outcomes.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Responsible for identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Function as a patient advocate.
  • Incorporate the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Practice within legal boundaries of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Comply with personnel policies.
  • Evaluate and validate performance with Nurse Manager or designee and set goals for work performance.
