About The Position

At Lingo, we’re building a groundbreaking health platform that combines continuous biosensor data, real-time analytics, and personalized insights to help people live fuller, longer, and healthier lives. Our systems ingest millions of sensor readings daily, powering experiences for consumers and partners worldwide, with the reliability and scalability of cloud-native, enterprise-grade platforms. At Abbott, you can do work that matters, grow, and learn, care for yourself and family, be your true self and live a full life. This Staff Mobile Engineer, Android position works onsite in our Alameda, CA location for Lingo. As a Staff Mobile Engineer, Android at Lingo, you will lead the design and development of the Android applications and shared mobile platform components that power our biosensing experience. In this role you will set the architectural direction for the Android codebase, raise the engineering bar across the mobile team, and take ownership of large, ambiguous initiatives from concept through production. You bring deep, hands-on Android expertise and modern Kotlin architecture practices, and you apply that expertise both to your own code and to how the broader team builds. You mentor other engineers, provide architectural guidance across Android teams, and lead design reviews that influence technical decisions across mobile, backend, and product. You are equally comfortable translating complex, ambiguous business problems into scalable technical solutions and communicating those solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. A core part of this role is leading Lingo's transition from React Native to fully native Android, owning the migration strategy and setting the technical standard the rest of the team follows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 8-10 years of software engineering experience with strong Android development expertise.
  • Deep proficiency in Kotlin and modern Android frameworks, with Jetpack Compose preferred.
  • Working knowledge of React Native sufficient to assess existing React Native code, plan a native migration, and bridge between React Native and native modules during a phased transition.
  • Strong experience with mobile architecture patterns, modularization, and large-scale app development.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Gradle optimization, and mobile observability tools.
  • Solid understanding of API design, performance tuning, and secure mobile development.
  • Proven track record of technical leadership and cross-team influence.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across a globally distributed engineering team spanning the US, Spain, and India.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience leading or contributing to a React Native to native migration in a production consumer application.
  • Experience in consumer health, digital health, or regulated industries where software quality and reliability have direct implications for end users.
  • Experience with GraphQL.
  • Experience integrating on-device or cloud-powered AI/ML capabilities into Android applications.
  • Familiarity with Bluetooth Low Energy protocols and mobile SDK integration for wearable or connected health devices.
  • Experience building and maintaining shared Android platform components, SDKs, or libraries consumed by other engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of complex Android applications and shared mobile platform components (SDKs, libraries, tooling).
  • Define and drive modern Android architecture standards, including Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, MVVM/MVI, and modularization.
  • Ensure scalable, maintainable, and testable code through strong design patterns and best practices; optimize app performance, reliability, and scalability, including startup time, ANRs, and crash-free sessions.
  • Own large, ambiguous initiatives from concept to production, establishing long-term Android technical strategy including modularization, CI/CD, build optimization, and observability.
  • Partner with backend teams to design efficient mobile APIs and offline-first solutions.
  • Lead the full development lifecycle: architecture, coding, testing, CI/CD, release management, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Champion automated testing, code quality standards, and secure mobile development practices.
  • Implement strong observability practices such as crash analytics and performance monitoring.
  • Integrate AI/ML capabilities into Android applications, including on-device and cloud-powered solutions, to deliver intelligent, personalized, mobile experiences.
  • Lead Lingo's migration from React Native to fully native Android, owning migration strategy, sequencing, and architecture decisions, including how to bridge React Native and native code during the transition, and how to preserve feature parity and app stability throughout.
  • Evaluate existing React Native components and screens for migration complexity, define native module and screen replacement patterns, and set the technical standard the rest of the Android team follows during the transition.
  • Mentor senior engineers and provide architectural guidance across Android teams.
  • Lead design reviews and influence technical decisions across mobile, backend, and product teams.
