About The Position

Axcelis is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of highly mechanized and automated capital equipment for the semiconductor industry, including ion implanters. The role works closely with product and marketing managers to develop innovative solutions for engineering challenges across new product development, continuous improvement, part obsolescence, and field-identified issues. The engineer champions sound engineering methods, analysis tools, Design for X (DfX), and concurrent product development processes to deliver effective solutions. In addition to owning projects, the role guides less experienced engineers through coaching and delegation. The position manages the mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products, partnering day to day with project managers and key customers. It coordinates with design services and offshore teams, maintains project schedules and budget guidelines, and communicates project status to customers and cross-functional groups. Designs must meet objectives, safety standards, SEMI industry requirements, and customer specifications. The role also executes the design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies and troubleshoots system-level issues across engineering disciplines.

  • Manage the mechanical engineering interface with the design services group and offshore teams to deliver quality designs on time.
  • Communicate development project status to customers and cross-functional groups, and ensure products and projects meet customer requirements and specifications.
  • Hold mechanical engineers accountable for quality goals, schedules, development processes, and system performance.
  • Manage the complete mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products in close day-to-day interaction with project managers and key customers.
  • Ensure mechanical designs meet design objectives, safety requirements, SEMI industry requirements, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Design, qualify, and release mechanical assemblies.
  • Troubleshoot system-level problems that cross engineering disciplines, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Guide less experienced engineers through coaching and delegation.
