Staff Manufacturing Process Engineer - Battery Cell Assembly

Amprius Technologies, Inc.•Fremont, CA
•$96,140 - $155,770•Onsite

About The Position

Amprius Technologies is hiring a hands-on Staff Manufacturing Process Engineer for its Manufacturing group in Fremont, California. The engineer will own process parameters, first-pass yield, and throughput for a group of lithium-ion cell-assembly stations. Assignments may cover front-end assembly—including electrode notching, stacking, and tab welding—or back-end assembly—including pouch forming, sealing, electrolyte filling, and degassing—and will be based on experience. The role will support bringing new pilot-line equipment online and ramping it to full production rate, and reports to the Pilot Line Manager. Within the first year, the engineer is expected to own first-pass yield and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) for assigned stations; release qualified process windows, control plans, and SOPs; and deliver measurable yield and cycle-time improvements reflected in line output. The position works closely with production, equipment vendors, maintenance, controls engineering, and R&D, and includes mentoring and supervising technicians as required. The role is on-site in Fremont, primarily on the production floor and in a dry room, with some desk and computer work. It involves working with lithium-ion cells, electrolyte, and solvents under established safety controls. Occasional off-shift or weekend support may be needed for production escalations. The salary range is $96,140 to $155,770, with the base salary determined by knowledge, experience, and education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of process or manufacturing engineering experience in lithium-ion cell production or comparable precision manufacturing, including hands-on ownership of cell-assembly processes.
  • Hands-on experience running, tuning, and qualifying cell-assembly equipment such as electrode notching or slitting, stacking or winding, ultrasonic or laser tab welding, pouch forming and sealing, electrolyte filling, and degassing.
  • Demonstrated ownership of yield or throughput improvements from data analysis and root cause through implementation and sustained results.
  • Proficiency with DOE and statistical analysis using JMP, Minitab, or equivalent, as well as SPC, PFMEA, and measurement system analysis (Gage R&R).
  • Working knowledge of how assembly parameters and defects—including alignment, weld quality, seal integrity, moisture ingress, and contamination—affect lithium-ion cell performance, safety, and yield.
  • Initiative, ability to work with minimal supervision and own critical projects, and ability to collaborate with technicians, operators, and cross-functional engineers.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to write SOPs and present data-driven recommendations to leadership.
  • Ability to work daily in a dry room and on the production floor, and commitment to environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree.
  • Pouch-cell assembly experience or exposure to silicon-anode or other next-generation chemistries.
  • Experience with MES and tool-data extraction and analysis using Python, SQL, or similar.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or equivalent lean certification.
  • Experience bringing new equipment or a new line from FAT/SAT through ramp to production rate.
  • For Staff level, experience mentoring engineers and leading cross-functional improvement programs.

Responsibilities

  • Own process parameters for assigned cell-assembly stations by developing recipes, defining and qualifying process windows, and maintaining process specifications and control plans.
  • Design and run structured experiments (DOE) to optimize parameters for yield, cycle time, and cell performance, and release results as specifications, SOPs, and operator training.
  • Own first-pass yield and scrap at assigned stations; build defect Paretos, lead root-cause investigations using methods such as 8D, 5-Why, and fishbone, and drive corrective and preventive actions to closure.
  • Improve throughput by measuring OEE and cycle time, identifying bottlenecks, leading line-balancing and changeover-reduction efforts, and quantifying capacity gains.
  • Implement SPC and in-line inspection for critical process parameters, and establish data collection through tool logs and MES to make yield and throughput visible by station, product, and shift.
  • Lead PFMEAs and control plans for new or changed processes, and qualify changes with capability studies such as Cpk and Gage R&R before production release.
  • Partner with equipment vendors, maintenance, and controls engineering to resolve tool issues affecting yield or uptime; support FAT/SAT and new-tool introduction as needed.
  • Write and maintain SOPs and work instructions; train and mentor technicians and operators.
  • Support daily production by troubleshooting process excursions, dispositioning nonconforming material, and responding to off-shift escalations when needed.
  • Apply lean and Six Sigma methods to continuous improvement across the assembly line, and champion safe handling of electrolyte and lithium-ion cells and safe dry-room operations.
  • Work with R&D engineers to develop processes for new products.
  • Maintain an active role in internal continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and supervise lab technicians as required.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, including HMO and PPO medical options.
  • Employer-funded Health Reimbursement Account (HRA).
  • HSA-compatible medical plan and FSA options.
  • Pet health insurance for dogs and cats.
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) plans.
  • Vacation leave starting at three weeks of annual accrual.
  • 10 paid holidays.
  • Sick time off.
  • Cell phone reimbursement.
