About The Position

Rula is seeking a Staff Forward Deployed Engineer to help business and clinical teams reduce time spent on manual work through AI-enabled tools. The engineer will embed with teams to understand how their work is done, then build and deliver tools that teams use regularly. The role focuses on turning lengthy workflows into much faster processes, ensuring teams can operate tools independently, and translating lessons from each deployment into reusable building blocks for future teams. Because Rula serves patients in mental health care, privacy is a core design requirement. Rula is a remote-first company and currently hires in most U.S. states, excluding Hawaii.

Requirements

  • 8+ years shipping production-quality software systems for consumer or business use, with end-to-end ownership of outcomes.
  • A proven track record of shipping tools or products used weekly by customers or business teams, supported by usage telemetry.
  • Deep experience learning operational workflows through observation, interviews, or data before designing software solutions.
  • Daily use of coding agents, including specifying work, testing, and reviewing output diffs.
  • Rigorous AI evaluation practices, including test sets and evaluations.
  • Privacy-by-design standards, including synthetic or masked data and isolating clinical content from operational tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building custom measurement frameworks for cost, usage, and impact tracking when standard vendor dashboards were unavailable.
  • Direct prior experience being forward-deployed to non-engineering business teams or external customer organizations.
  • Practical experience migrating systems across different LLM models to optimize costs while maintaining quality guardrails.
  • Proven ability to integrate AI into complex business platforms with imperfect data or APIs, such as CRM, billing, or scheduling systems.
  • A track record of coaching non-engineering team members to build or adopt software workflows independently.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside business and clinical teams to learn their operational workflows through observation, interviews, or data.
  • Design and ship production-quality AI tools that teams use regularly, with a focus on reducing time spent on manual work.
  • Stay engaged until teams can run the delivered tools independently.
  • Turn learnings from deployments into reusable building blocks that help other teams move faster.
  • Apply privacy-by-design standards, including use of synthetic or masked data and isolation of clinical content from operational tools.
  • Use rigorous evaluation practices, including test sets and evaluations, when developing AI systems.

Benefits

  • 100% remote work environment with working hours intended to support work-life balance.
  • Transparent pay ranges regardless of U.S. location.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and FSA/HSA benefits.

  • Generous time-off policies, including two company-wide shutdown weeks each year for most employees.
  • Paid parental leave for birthing, non-birthing, adopting, and fostering parents.
  • Employee Assistance Program supporting mental and physical health.
  • Quarterly department stipend for team-building activities or in-person gatherings.
  • Community and employee resource groups.
  • New-hire home office stipend and $50 monthly stipend for internet or cell phone expenses.
  • Wellness initiatives and a $50/month wellness stipend.
