About The Position

Haley & Aldrich is seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist 1, Stormwater to join their growing team. This role is a technical support position working with skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment. It offers a recent graduate the opportunity to support stormwater quality management and environmental compliance projects. The position is full-time and based in the Los Angeles/Ventura County Area, virtually assigned to the Costa Mesa, CA office. During the stormwater season (October-April), the work will be primarily field-based in Ventura/Los Angeles Counties, involving stormwater sampling, compliance inspections, coordination with contractors and laboratories, implementation of standard operating procedures, data management, and technical reporting. Rain-event response may require early starts, on-call availability, and some weekends/holidays. Outside the stormwater season, the role will involve other field assignments and office-based data analysis and reporting. Relocation assistance is available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • 0 to 2 years of related field experience.
  • Proficient technical writing, verbal communication, reasoning, and time management skills.
  • Able to work independently or with minimal direction in performing tasks and assignments under the direction of senior staff.
  • Desire to learn and grow in your profession, demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, resourcefulness, flexibility, and ownership.
  • Familiar with environmental analytical testing and data reduction techniques for soil, water, and air.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the position: lift 50 lbs., traverse unstable/sloping sites and landscapes, work outside in a range of weather conditions, and have the stamina for moderate physical activity for the majority of field working hours.
  • Able to travel to work locations that may require overnight stays.
  • Able to work primarily in the field during the stormwater season, generally October through April, including early-morning starts and on-call response during rain events, weekends, and holidays when required.
  • Able to report to the designated primary project site in Los Angeles/Ventura County area within one hour due to site-specific stormwater permit requirements.
  • Able to pass client-specific background screenings and obtain required site access badges.
  • Able to handle large sample volumes and safely operate or ride in field vehicles, including four-wheel-drive vehicles when necessary.
  • Must have reliable transportation or be able to rent a vehicle for site access; primary project sites are not accessible by public transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering or related field.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS.
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Interest in obtaining one or more construction stormwater certifications, such as CISEC, CPESC, CPSWQ, or CESSWI.
  • Experience or academic exposure related to Industrial NPDES, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, or MS4 programs.
  • Experience with soil, groundwater, air, or stormwater sampling and reporting methods.
  • Familiarity with California stormwater regulations, construction and post-construction best management practices, and environmental compliance inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations and assessments of soil, groundwater, surface water, etc. using approved industry standard procedures.
  • Conduct basic construction observation, including quality control documentation and field testing tasks.
  • Conduct or oversee remedial system O&M and field pilot study demonstrations.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed documentation of activities both in the field and during data evaluation.
  • Apply academic training and use computer software to perform calculations and evaluation of information.
  • Support project environmental data reduction and summarization.
  • Support project feasibility study, remedial design, cost estimating, and permitting tasks.
  • Assist with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS tasks.
  • Draft technical sections of project communications and reports.
  • Assist with the development of technical scopes of work and cost estimating for proposal efforts on small- to medium-sized project opportunities.
  • Perform all work in accordance with company and client health and safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate the company’s foundational safety behaviors.
  • Support site-specific environmental compliance activities related to stormwater quality management, construction and post-construction best management practices, NPDES permitting, and California stormwater requirements.
  • Conduct stormwater sampling, site inspections, and field monitoring activities in accordance with applicable permits, project plans, and standard operating procedures.
  • Coordinate field activities with project team members, contractors, laboratories, and other project stakeholders.
  • Assist with permit reviews and the evaluation of applicable local, regional, state, and federal stormwater requirements.
  • Support stormwater data validation, analysis, visualization, and preparation of compliance reports and other technical deliverables.
  • Support field programs involving stormwater quality management, contaminated-site investigation and management, and environmental protection-related construction, maintenance, and monitoring.
