About The Position

SLR Consulting (US) is seeking an Environmental Engineer to join their growing Portland, Oregon office. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of industrial wastewater treatment, water quality, permitting, and remediation projects across North America. The role involves working alongside experienced engineers and scientists to evaluate treatment technologies, support engineering design, conduct field investigations, participate in system startup and troubleshooting, and help clients solve complex environmental challenges. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys combining field work, data analysis, and engineering design while developing practical experience across multiple environmental disciplines. Successful candidates will receive hands-on mentorship while gaining experience in field investigations, treatment system design, regulatory compliance, and client-facing engineering projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Civil Engineering (with an environmental or wastewater focus).
  • 1-3 years of experience in consulting, industrial wastewater treatment, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to participate in field assignments including sample collection, site inspections, facility assessments, pilot testing, and treatment system evaluations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clients, regulators, contractors, operators, and multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the United States and Canada, including overnight travel.
  • Desire to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations including the Clean Water Act (CWA), RCRA, CERCLA, and Oregon/Washington environmental regulations.
  • Understanding of industrial operations, manufacturing processes, and water or wastewater treatment systems.
  • Experience with technical writing and preparation of engineering reports.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other engineering design software.

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal and external clients across a variety of industries on water quality, wastewater treatment, permitting, and remediation projects throughout North America.
  • Support surface water discharge permitting projects, including mixing zone studies, water quality evaluations, and regulatory compliance assessments.
  • Analyze wastewater treatment system performance, evaluate monitoring data, support compliance assessments, and contribute to technical reports and engineering recommendations.
  • Review federal, state, provincial, and local regulations and permits for applicability to client operations and projects.
  • Assist with the design of wastewater treatment, stormwater treatment, and soil and groundwater remediation systems.
  • Support development of engineering drawings and specifications through design calculations, CAD markups, drawing review, and coordination with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Evaluate and compare treatment technologies for wastewater, stormwater, soil, and groundwater applications, including bench-scale and pilot-scale testing.
  • Conduct field investigations including wastewater, stormwater, groundwater, and soil sampling, treatment system inspections, and operational assessments.
  • Participate in construction observation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of treatment and remediation systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Work directly with facility operators, contractors, regulators, and project teams to understand operational challenges and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Support multidisciplinary projects involving industrial compliance, air quality, environmental due diligence, and other environmental engineering disciplines.
  • Manage multiple assignments concurrently while contributing to project schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
