About The Position

As a Staff Engineer on Greenlight Rent’s data team, you will build the systems that produce, move, and serve data—not just pipelines and queries. You will set technical direction for how data flows through the company, from application services and APIs to the warehouse, models, and business tools. You will work with product, finance, and operations partners to turn rental-housing problems into reliable software and trustworthy data. Teams are small, with about three engineers each. Staff Engineers remain hands-on, spending most of the week building while also leading the team and developing its people.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including technical leadership at the senior or staff level.
  • Deep expertise in at least one modern backend language, such as Python, Ruby, Go, TypeScript, or Java, and a record of building and shipping application systems rather than only data pipelines.
  • Strong data engineering skills, including SQL, data modeling, data warehouses such as Snowflake or BigQuery, transformation tools such as dbt, and orchestration tools such as Prefect or Airflow.
  • Experience designing and scaling APIs, distributed systems, and relational databases.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) and CI/CD.
  • Product sense and an interest in why work is being built and whether it succeeded.
  • Fluency with AI coding tools and sound judgment about the quality of their output.
  • A track record of leading ambiguous, high-impact projects to completion.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, insurtech, payments, or proptech.
  • Familiarity with regulated environments, such as SOC 2, PCI, or consumer-finance rules.
  • Experience building 0-to-1 products or data platforms at a startup or growth-stage company.
  • Experience managing engineers, or a wish to grow into it.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build data foundations, including event and data models, ingestion from application databases and partner integrations, and warehouse and transformation layers.
  • Write production application code, including services, APIs, and jobs that generate and use data.
  • Own measurable outcomes with product and business partners, including decisions about scope and sequencing.
  • Own the reliability and correctness of business-critical data, including monthly close, reporting, and partner data.
  • Write high-quality code and establish standards for testing, code review, observability, and data quality, including reviewing AI-generated code as needed.
  • Make pragmatic build-versus-buy and other tradeoff decisions, and document them clearly.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, design reviews, and feedback, and lead a few direct reports.
  • Keep sensitive financial and personal data secure and compliant.

Benefits

  • Competitive cash compensation package including base salary, milestone-based bonus, and other financial perks.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, with up to 90% employer contribution, eligible from the start date.
  • 401(k).
  • HSA.
  • Life and disability insurance coverage, with $0 employee contribution for additional insurances.
  • Unlimited PTO policy.
  • Generous paid parental leave.
  • Stock option plan.
  • Remote-first work culture with opportunities to collaborate in person as a team.
  • Monthly lifestyle stipend for meals, wellness, or co-working.
