About The Position

WD is seeking an Embedded System Engineer to provide crucial electronics support to firmware, manufacturing, and customer-facing teams for all HDD products. This role involves collaborating with firmware development teams to ensure optimal utilization of new hardware features, resolving electronic issues to maintain product schedules, and developing firmware solutions for hardware use cases. The engineer will also support manufacturing by resolving electronic issues that could impact yield, quality, or shipments, and by developing tools to monitor failure trends. Customer support includes collaborating with FAE and WWFA teams to prevent delays in qualification and ensure customer satisfaction, as well as analyzing customer data for failure trends. Staff Embedded System Engineers possess broad system-level knowledge with specialized expertise in at least one design area, staying abreast of technical advancements and contributing to the group's problem-solving capabilities. They employ methodical problem-solving processes, are proficient with debug tools, own and maintain relevant tools, and can independently solve complex problems within their expertise. Staff Engineers work with some direction and supervision, proactively providing clear and concise status updates on complex issues.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering
  • Experience with failure modes to triage system failures, and use of tools to isolate failure(s) of a particular design area: Blink Codes, error logs (ShowStop/Debug Snapshots), Bus Traces, firmware Event Trace Logging (ETL), debug PCBA design
  • Experience with high speed signal guidelines of printed circuit boards and ability to identify potential signal integrity problems when reviewing schematics
  • Proficient in Hardware debug using oscilloscopes, signal generators, logic analyzers, bus analyzers, hardware embedded trace, test muxes, GHS Probe, and Serial Debugger.
  • System level knowledge of HDD with understanding of both firmware and hardware.
  • Experience programming using C++ code.
  • Ability to modify code for design-of-experiments.
  • Ability to develop and maintain test scripts written in TCL and Python.
  • Strong Problem Solving including practical knowledge of A3 and 8D methodologies.
  • Strong communication, especially the ability to collaborate across engineering organizations, geographies, and cultures.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise summaries of complex problems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide firmware support, collaborating with firmware development teams to ensure new hardware features are utilized completely and correctly.
  • Work with FW and HW design teams to quickly resolve electronic issues, ensuring product schedules are not impacted.
  • Develop firmware solutions for hardware use cases.
  • Provide manufacturing support, collaborating with manufacturing teams to resolve electronic issues impacting yield, quality, or shipments.
  • Develop tools and data mining strategies to monitor and assess failure trends in manufacturing.
  • Provide customer support, collaborating with FAE and WWFA teams to ensure issues do not delay qualification or impact customer satisfaction.
  • Perform data mining of customer data for failure trends.
  • Utilize methodical problem-solving processes.
  • Be proficient in using debug tools and techniques.
  • Own and maintain the tools utilized in their area of expertise.
  • Independently solve complex problems in their area of expertise.
  • Meet goals with some direction and supervision.
  • Proactively provide status with clear and concise summaries of complex problems.
