Staff Embedded Software Engineer, Pixel Interfaces

Google•Mountain View, CA
•$207,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Google is seeking a Staff Embedded Software Engineer to work on Pixel Interfaces and define software architecture for Low-Speed IO (LSIO) subsystems across Linux kernel and bare-metal/RTOS firmware environments. The role involves pre-silicon validation and enabling day-one silicon bring-up, as well as close collaboration with silicon, board engineering, and peripheral teams. The engineer will provide technical leadership, code reviews, and architectural mentorship across global sites. Google software engineers develop technologies used by billions of people and work on projects critical to Google's needs. Engineers are expected to be versatile, show leadership qualities, and take on new problems as the business evolves. The stated U.S. compensation is $207,000–$300,000, plus a 20% bonus target, equity, and benefits. Individual pay depends on job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • Experience in embedded systems, Linux drivers, and C/C++.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of professional software development experience in Linux kernel development and bare-metal embedded systems.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience reading hardware spec sheets to infer hardware capabilities.
  • Experience designing and implementing device drivers and software architectures for low-speed peripheral buses, including I2C, I3C, SPI, UART, I2S, Pinctrl/Pinmux, and GPIO.
  • Experience leading system architecture and post-silicon bring-up for complex SoCs.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the multi-generation software architecture for Low-Speed IO (LSIO) subsystems across Linux kernel (upstream/GKI and vendor modules) and bare-metal/Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) firmware environments.
  • Lead pre-silicon validation strategies using Gem5, QEMU, and FPGA emulation platforms to enable day-one silicon bring-up and maximize pre-silicon driver coverage.
  • Partner with Silicon Architecture, Digital Design, Board EE, and peripheral client teams (Camera, Audio, Touch, Sensors, Wireless) to ensure seamless connectivity with LSIO peripherals.
  • Provide technical guidance, code reviews, and architectural mentorship to team members across global sites.
