Staff Embedded Graphics Software

Ambiq Micro, Inc.•Austin, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

As the Staff Embedded Graphics Software Engineer at Ambiq, you will drive the development, integration, and validation of graphics software on Ambiq SoC devices and emulation platforms, focusing on the graphics processing unit (GPU) HAL and graphics stack for Ambiq’s mainstream and next-generation MCU. The role is part of the global MCU software development team and involves close collaboration with Architecture, MCU SoC Design, Design Verification, and System Test teams to bring graphics capabilities from FPGA emulation platforms to production silicon. You will maintain the current platform and extend the GPU hardware adaptation layer (HAL) and graphics SDK software stack to new platforms, enhancing its features and content and adding support for new MCU family members. The successful candidate is a fast-learning, results-driven, self-motivated team player who is comfortable with hands-on embedded-systems debugging in a lab environment. The position is on-site five days a week in Northwest Austin.

Requirements

  • MS in ECE or Computer Science and 6+ years of experience, or BS in ECE/CS with 8+ years of experience.
  • Strong expertise in at least one embedded GPU IP, a solid understanding of the full graphics pipeline, and hands-on experience developing HAL and graphics software stacks.
  • In-depth experience with OpenGL ES or other 3D graphics APIs.
  • Experience with graphics UI frameworks such as LVGL.
  • Experience with embedded system display interfaces such as MIPI DSI, DBI, DPI, or Memory-In-Pixel.
  • In-depth knowledge of ARM architecture.
  • Strong understanding of embedded RTOS concepts.
  • Experience developing embedded MCU code in C and assembly language on Arm Cortex-M processors, using at least one MCU IDE.
  • Strong hands-on experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers for debugging.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, and collaboration tools.
  • Experience with source code control systems; git is required.
  • Understanding of software testing and test automation principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills for complex system-level hardware/software debugging issues.
  • Scripting language experience is required.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer; employment visa sponsorship or transfer is not offered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vector graphics acceleration or software libraries such as OpenVG.
  • ARM M-profile (Cortex-M) architecture experience.
  • Experience with Zephyr and FreeRTOS.
  • Experience with MCU IDEs such as ARM, Keil, IAR, Eclipse, or O-zone.
  • Experience using AI tools such as Cursor or OpenAI’s Codex to develop test code or debug issues.
  • Python experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with software architects to define and evolve the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) and graphics software, including APIs, middleware, and UI frameworks for embedded GPUs on Ambiq MCUs.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of the GPU HAL and integrate Display HAL layers.
  • Develop, integrate, and optimize graphics middleware, including OpenGL ES and vector graphics implementations, and integrate graphics UI frameworks such as LVGL.
  • Investigate and improve rendering performance, memory usage, and power efficiency; resolve issues across CPU, GPU, memory, and display paths.
  • Develop and maintain example applications, benchmarks, and test cases to demonstrate and validate graphics features.
  • Contribute to GPU-focused pre-silicon verification on FPGA platforms and post-silicon bring-up, system validation, and debugging.
  • Support Design Verification and System Test teams, field engineers, and key customers as needed.
