About The Position

Corning is strengthening its Ribbon Ceramics (RC) equipment capability to support growth in new applications within the MCP Capability Group. This role will serve as an equipment development subject matter expert (SME), supporting the development and delivery of new custom systems to enable innovation growth programs. This position participates on fast-paced technology teams that deliver systems to enable next-generation and new products to market. The primary focus is the development and delivery of custom-designed, high-temperature, robust process equipment that provides competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses and enables new product lines. Equipment will be development-scale or pilot-scale in nature.

Requirements

  • Minimum BS degree in mechanical engineering or related field
  • 5+ years experience with equipment design, machine design or equipment development in related field
  • Strong mechanical design skills with broad knowledge of: Materials and material behavior, Fabrication methods (machining, forming, molding, etc.), Tolerance stack-ups and error budgets
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (SolidWorks preferred) and use of simulation tools to optimize designs and/or demonstrate feasibility (e.g., FEA, CFD).
  • Excellent command of engineering fundamentals with the ability to apply them to practical, innovative designs; capable of proposing and extending state-of-the-art solutions.
  • Experience integrating commercially available technologies such as robotics, automation equipment, furnaces, sensors and controls into robust manufacturing solutions.
  • Bench-scale prototyping experience.

  • Specific technical experiences desired in one or more of these areas: Roll-to-roll (R2R) equipment design, High-temperature furnaces or thermal processing equipment, Advanced ceramics or similar materials processing
  • Demonstrated results in a high-tech, fast-paced, and dynamic environment.
  • Manufacturing and/or pilot manufacturing experience for advanced products.
  • Use of internal lab facilities and equipment to develop proof-of-concept prototypes.
  • Leveraging external vendors and system integrators to deliver complex equipment.
  • Experience leading technical teams and managing projects.
  • Ability to systematically combine theory, modeling, and mechanistic understanding into practical problem-solving and knowledge delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Participate on or lead equipment delivery teams as part of a fast-paced technology organization. Establish plans from requirements, design, execution and acceptance testing.
  • Conceptualize, design, build, and support install and debug development-scale and pilot-scale custom equipment for advanced materials processing.
  • Work closely with process and technology experts to establish requirements, understand trade-offs, and deliver optimized equipment designs.
  • Interface with and manage external vendors, machine shops and integrators to fabricate, integrate and evaluate equipment.
  • Lead hands-on prototyping and testing as required.
  • Prepare and present technical material and design documentation for team and stakeholder reviews.
  • Coordinate across process areas to build a shared understanding of system-level performance and capabilities.
