Staff Data Scientist, Actuarial

Nourish•New York, NY
•Onsite

About The Position

Nourish is hiring its first dedicated actuarial data science professional to quantify the economic impact of its nutrition care. The role will design claims-based studies, develop actuarial models, and produce evidence demonstrating the value of Nourish to current and prospective payer partners. Findings will inform payer partnerships, commercial strategy, and understanding of where Nourish care creates the greatest value. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role working closely with Commercial and Clinical teams, partnering with Analytics Engineering, and reporting to the Head of Data. The data team is based in New York City and works from the office three or more days per week; the role is intended for someone excited to work onsite and participate in that culture.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of healthcare actuarial or medical economics experience at a health plan, actuarial consultancy, employee benefits consultancy, or digital health company, including substantial experience analyzing healthcare costs and utilization.
  • Fluency in medical and pharmacy claims, eligibility data, and coding systems including ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and NDC.
  • Understanding of PMPM, cost trends, claims completion, risk adjustment, and considerations that affect healthcare savings analyses.
  • Experience designing or conducting claims-based evaluations of care programs, healthcare vendors, or clinical interventions; ideally, experience evaluating programs from the payer’s perspective.
  • Strong statistical and causal inference skills, including observational study design, matched comparison groups, risk adjustment, and methods for addressing selection bias and confounding.
  • Strong hands-on analytical skills, including clean, performant SQL and proficiency in Python or R; ability to independently take an analysis from raw data to actionable findings.
  • Ability to translate complex actuarial analyses into clear, persuasive narratives for technical and non-technical audiences, defend methodology, explain limitations, and address challenging questions from health plan actuaries.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and an entrepreneurial, cross-functional environment; ownership from problem definition through delivery and interest in building new capabilities.
  • Motivation to advance Nourish’s mission and belief in the potential of food as medicine to improve healthcare.

Nice To Haves

  • Progress toward or completion of ASA or FSA credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Lead payer value studies by designing and executing claims-based analyses of Nourish care’s impact on medical and pharmacy spending, healthcare utilization, and total cost of care.
  • Develop credible causal impact estimates using appropriate study designs, matched comparison groups, risk adjustment, and causal inference methods.
  • Build actuarial models for prospective partners to estimate potential cost savings, PMPM impact, and ROI for specific health plan populations.
  • Produce study reports and executive summaries for health plan partners, and work with the Commercial team to communicate findings, methodologies, limitations, and responses to actuarial and clinical questions.
  • Identify the patient populations, conditions, and healthcare cost drivers where Nourish may generate the greatest savings, and turn findings into recommendations for Commercial and Clinical teams.
  • Partner with Analytics Engineering to create reusable datasets, standardized methodologies, and repeatable workflows for efficient, rigorous evaluations across payer populations.
