About The Position

Metriport is seeking a data engineering leader to own their data platform end-to-end. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing and operating large-scale data platforms, including distributed processing, lakehouses, warehouses, streaming, and orchestration. This role involves leading engineers, owning technical direction and outcomes, and driving data reliability, quality, and governance. The position requires an entrepreneurial mindset, a strong work ethic, and a focus on delivering customer value efficiently. The Staff Data Engineer will be responsible for the architecture and evolution of the data platform that powers Metriport's product, ensuring it scales with patient and customer growth.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of engineering experience with significant depth in building, operating, and scaling data platforms processing terabytes of data and millions-to-billions of events a day.
  • Designed data architectures end-to-end (ingestion, storage, processing, warehousing, serving) and owned the tradeoffs (cost, latency, correctness, operability).
  • Deep experience with modern, cloud-native data stacks: Spark, open table formats (Parquet, Iceberg, Delta) on S3, warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), dbt, orchestration (Airflow, Dagster), and streaming (Kafka, Kinesis).
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals; ability to write production code (TypeScript, Python for data/ML workflows).
  • Experience mentoring or guiding other engineers through code reviews, pairing, design feedback, or onboarding.
  • Located in San Francisco / Bay Area, or willing to relocate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading engineers.
  • Experience building or supporting ML/data science workflows (feature pipelines, model inputs/outputs, unstructured data extraction).
  • Familiarity with healthcare standards/technologies: FHIR, HIE, IHE, EHR/EMR, NPI, TEFCA, ADT, HL7, HEDIS, RAF, SNOMED, LOINC, ICD-10, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture and evolution of the data platform, including warehouse, data lake, and ETL/ELT architecture.
  • Set the technical direction for the data platform, selecting appropriate tools for batch and streaming processing, table formats, orchestration, and query engines.
  • Drive critical data projects end-to-end, from writing Design Documents to shipping and iterating on versions.
  • Support AI/ML efforts by ensuring AI Engineers have the necessary data.
  • Mentor engineers on data fundamentals, review designs and PRs, and balance investment in quality with speed of delivery.
  • Act as a Team Lead, breaking down and delegating work, unblocking teammates, and owning team delivery while remaining hands-on.
  • Drive bi-weekly sprint planning and retrospectives.
  • Contribute to the engineering roadmap.
  • Participate in the daily 30-min remote stand-up at 7:30 am PST.
  • Take part in the on-call rotation.
