About The Position

The role We think wireless communication can be perfectly reliable – no matter where our cars go. We’re looking for cellular experts who agree. Our vehicle communication team is hiring a software engineer to design and develop cellular software in our Linux-based networking system. Join us to develop the best connectivity experience found in any car. What you'll do GM is developing a breakthrough new system for vehicle software and communications, and you'll be at the heart of it. We design our own hardware, so you'll work closely with hardware teams to meet the tough power, signal, and reliability requirements of vehicles. You'll also work closely with our application and cloud teams to ensure end-to-end reliability and performance.

Requirements

  • You should know Linux/POSIX systems and system software fundamentals across the whole stack - from drivers through applications.
  • You’ve shipped software at the junction of the cellular stack and the operating system.
  • You’ve worked with modem control interface layers, such as Qualcomm’s TelSDK or QMI, or the Android RIL.
  • You know how to integrate cellular data into an operating system, through routing, firewalls, tethering, VPNs, and handoffs between WiFi and cellular.
  • You know how to triage and debug end-to-end issues in a team, and can perform and analyze packet captures.
  • You enjoy debugging difficult latency and connection issues that span framework, modem control, radio, kernel, and carrier.
  • Most of our code is written in C, C++, and Java, so we expect you know at least one of these languages well.
  • BS/MS/PhD in computer science or electrical engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years software development experience
  • Most importantly, you have a deep drive to make cellular work perfectly, on any carrier, modem, and in any signal conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience collaborating with radio and operating system vendors to debug issues
  • Experience with IMS-adjacent system integration (VoLTE/VoWiFi behaviors, emergency calling flows, QoS policy plumbing) focusing on OS services and reliability rather than deep protocol implementation.
  • Familiarity with 4G/5G device behavior from an OS perspective (network selection policies, roaming behavior, dual-SIM/DSDS state management, recovery strategies).
  • Experience with eSIM/eUICC userland flows (activation/provisioning UX, profile management, secure storage, lifecycle and error recovery) and carrier-driven edge cases.
  • Strong automation background for cellular reliability: lab harnesses, simulated networks, test plans aligned with certification suites, and telemetry-driven regression detection.
  • Working knowledge of modem control-plane interfaces end-to-end: high-level vendor control APIs/SDK patterns and their underlying transports (e.g., QMI/MBIM/AT-style concepts), plus coordination with power/thermal and connectivity policy.
  • The ability to collaborate with hardware engineers to debug antenna, power and operating system issues

Benefits

  • GM offers a variety of health and wellbeing benefit programs.
  • Benefit options include medical, dental, vision, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Accounts, retirement savings plan, sickness and accident benefits, life insurance, paid vacation & holidays, tuition assistance programs, employee assistance program, GM vehicle discounts and more.
