Staff Backend Engineer, Data Ingestion

ScribeSan Francisco, CA
$180,000 - $280,000Remote

About The Position

As a Staff Backend Engineer, Data Ingestion, you'll own the backend platform and observability systems that keep Scribe's Workflow Mapping capture and ingestion systems healthy at scale. Our desktop apps and browser extensions run across hundreds of thousands of installations worldwide. You'll build the systems that help us understand whether those apps are capturing data reliably, identify problems across the fleet, and ensure the data they produce flows dependably into our processing and AI pipelines. This is a hands-on technical leadership role on our Recorder Engineering team. You'll shape the feature, reliability, and observability roadmap for the Workflow Mapping client platform, establish meaningful measures of ingestion health, and drive improvements across team boundaries. You'll work primarily in Python, with TypeScript and Go as needed, and partner with engineers deploying and operating our services in AWS.

Requirements

  • Deep experience building backend applications and a track record of owning complex production systems at Staff-level scope.
  • Strong Python skills and are comfortable working across TypeScript and Go as needed.
  • Designed and operated distributed systems and large-scale data ingestion pipelines, and understand the tradeoffs between reliability, performance, and scale.
  • Built monitoring and observability systems that make production health measurable and help teams detect, diagnose, and resolve failures.
  • Confident working with message queues, background jobs, and task orchestration tools such as Celery, SQS, RabbitMQ, or Kafka.
  • Experience designing, deploying, and maintaining production services in AWS.
  • Can turn an ambiguous problem into a technical roadmap, align engineers across teams, and carry work from design through production operation.
  • Combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership, write pragmatic and maintainable code, and take ownership of the health of the systems you build.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience monitoring the health and reliability of a large fleet of desktop apps, browser extensions, or other distributed clients.
  • Experience with Django.
  • Experience working at a startup or in another fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the backend ingestion services that connect data capture to processing and AI pipelines, with a focus on scale, reliability, and performance.
  • Improve background-job reliability and task orchestration so captured data moves dependably through the platform.
  • Design, deploy, and operate production services in AWS, using observability to identify failures, troubleshoot bottlenecks, and guide improvements.
  • Set the technical direction and drive the feature, reliability, and observability roadmap for the Workflow Mapping client platform in partnership with Recorder Engineering and adjacent teams.
  • Lead cross-team technical work, clarify ownership, unblock engineers, and set a high bar for scalable architecture and maintainable code.
