About The Position

Work on cases involving claims of wrongful conviction alongside post-conviction counsel at the Loyola Project for the Innocent. The Staff Attorney will supervise law students and interns on their assigned cases. Requirements

  • Must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Candidates must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of California, or be a member in good standing of another U.S. state bar and sit for the next available California Bar Examination, obtaining California Bar membership within one year of hire.
  • A minimum one year of experience practicing law (will consider law school clinical experience).
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills and work well in teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior post-conviction, criminal, or other in-court litigation experience or training is valued and strongly preferred.
  • Experience in criminal law is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing investigation plans and litigation strategies, which often includes compiling case records, evaluating police reports and other crucial case documents, locating and interviewing witnesses, and drafting witness statements.
  • Drafting habeas corpus petitions, directing investigations, court-appearances and oral arguments as necessary, and conducting motion practice and evidentiary hearings.
  • Maintain attorney client relationship in accordance with the rules of professional responsibility applicable to attorneys practicing in California.
  • Work with and, in conjunction with supervising attorneys, monitor, direct and provide feedback to clinical students on their casework.
  • Some travel is required for case investigation and client meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
