About The Position

Housing Works seeks a Staff Attorney to conduct poverty law and impact litigation. Housing Works seeks an attorney with at least one year of housing court experience to provide services to indigent people living with HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable individuals chiefly in the area of housing law, along with benefits, name changes, and other individual client services, and to assist with our award-winning impact litigation. Housing Works, Inc. (HW) operates as a healing community dedicated to fighting for inclusive care, social justice, and equitable access to healthcare for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic conditions. Housing Works was founded in 1990; With a long-term commitment to AIDS advocacy. Housing Works established New York State’s first harm reduction-based, OASAS-licensed outpatient drug treatment program. Other services include Health Home care management, behavioral health, and syringe exchange programs. A pioneer in the social entrepreneurship movement, Housing Works operates 10 high-end thrift shops in Manhattan and Brooklyn and a much-loved Bookstore Cafe in Soho. Requirements

• At least one year of housing court experience
• A strong commitment to social justice and human/civil rights
• Initiative and strong research, writing, and interpersonal skills
• Significant experience with housing law
• Bar membership required.

Nice To Haves

• Spanish proficiency preferred but not required

Responsibilities

• Intake, advice, and representation in all facets of housing law, along with some benefits, consumer, and name change matters
• Assistance in all phases of impact litigation on issues such as housing, disability, and gender discrimination, public assistance, and homelessness.
