About The Position

Community Advocates for Family & Youth (CAFY) is seeking an experienced Maryland-licensed attorney to lead its specialized divorce and family law services exclusively for domestic violence survivors and protective parents of children who have experienced abuse. This role offers an opportunity for an attorney passionate about access to justice, victim advocacy, and trauma-informed legal services to lead a growing nonprofit legal program designed to help survivors safely navigate the divorce process and related family law matters.

Requirements

  • Active Maryland Bar license in good standing.
  • Active membership with the Maryland State Bar.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Demonstrated experience handling Maryland divorce and family law matters.
  • Strong understanding of domestic violence and its impact on survivors and children.
  • Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, and courtroom skills.
  • Trauma-informed, client-centered approach.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary nonprofit environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience representing victims of domestic violence, protective parents, or underserved populations strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead CAFY’s divorce proceedings program for eligible domestic violence survivors and protective parents of abused children.
  • Handle uncontested and other appropriate divorce proceedings based on client eligibility and program capacity.
  • Prepare and file pleadings, motions, agreements, and other court documents.
  • Prepare clients for court and provide courtroom representation when appropriate.
  • Assess safety concerns and incorporate domestic violence dynamics into legal strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with CAFT staff attorney, legal assistant, and CAFY victim advocates, counselors, case managers, and other professionals.
  • Maintain accurate case records, deadlines, documentation, and program reporting.
  • Develop efficient procedures for intake, case acceptance, referrals, and case management.
  • Help establish and grow a sustainable legal services model for survivors and protective parents.
