About The Position

BronxWorks is a leading nonprofit serving Bronx residents for over 50 years. With more than 65 program sites, we provide housing support, youth and senior services, immigration assistance, financial empowerment, and more. Our Legal Services Department works to advance housing justice and prevent displacement for low-income tenants across the Bronx. BronxWorks Legal Services – Tenant Defense Program As one of New York City’s newest Right to Counsel providers, our Tenant Defense Program delivers full legal representation to tenants facing eviction. Our modern office—located near Bronx Housing Court and Yankee Stadium—supports a fast‑paced litigation practice grounded in collaboration, community engagement, and racial equity. BronxWorks seeks passionate law graduates and newly admitted attorneys to join our growing Tenant Defense team. This role offers immediate courtroom experience and the opportunity to help shape a rapidly expanding housing defense practice.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • July 2026 Bar Exam taker, newly admitted NY attorney, or recent bar passer.
  • Commitment to social justice and working with diverse communities.
  • Strong research, writing, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage a high‑volume, fast‑paced caseload.

Nice To Haves

  • Housing or landlord‑tenant experience.
  • Litigation exposure (clinic, internship, externship).
  • Spanish or other relevant language proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full legal representation for tenants in Housing Court, administrative hearings, and NYCHA proceedings.
  • Handle all aspects of litigation: client counseling, research, motion practice, negotiations, discovery, depositions, hearings, and trials.
  • Participate in court‑based intake and maintain regular communication with clients.
  • Build expertise in housing law, subsidies, and public benefits.
  • Conduct community outreach, workshops, and Know Your Rights trainings.
  • Attend in‑person team meetings and contribute to a collaborative work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
