About The Position

UC Irvine Law is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Environmental Law Clinic. This role involves working closely with the Director and other faculty on all aspects of client representation, including legal research, drafting legal documents, conducting discovery, and participating in trials and appeals. The Staff Attorney will also provide legal advice, engage in public speaking, handle media appearances, and perform administrative tasks such as case intake and event planning. The position requires working independently on Clinic matters, especially when students are unavailable, and collaboratively with Clinic students, providing guidance and direction. This role is ideal for those seeking experience in public interest environmental law or clinical teaching.

Requirements

  • At least one year of legal experience, with at least some experience with California or federal environmental and/or natural resources law.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to be detail oriented.
  • Excellent time management skills, and the ability to manage diverse activities and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a highly-collaborative manner with a diverse client group, staff, and law students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of social contexts.
  • Solid knowledge of legal research computer applications, document sharing technology and research tools.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients, and individuals of all identities, experiences, and perspectives.
  • JD or other law degree from a State Bar-accredited or American Bar Association approved law school.
  • Member in good standing of the State Bar of California and maintain that standing through continuing legal education credits required by the State Bar.
  • Alternatively a member of the Bar of another State who meets the requirements of, and successfully registers as, a legal aid attorney under California Rule of Court 9.45.

Responsibilities

  • Work on all aspects of client representation, including legal research, drafting memoranda, pleadings, briefs, and other court filings.
  • Conduct informal and formal discovery.
  • Participate in trials and appeals, and appear on behalf of Clinic clients.
  • Provide clients with legal advice.
  • Engage in public speaking and other forms of oral and written advocacy.
  • Handle media appearances.
  • Perform administrative clinic support such as case intake, planning and managing events, and meeting with stakeholders.
  • Work independently on Clinic matters, including when students are unavailable.
  • Work collaboratively and closely with Clinic students on Clinic matters, providing guidance, suggestions, and direction.
