About The Position

Kentucky Public Pensions Authority (KPPA) is currently seeking a Staff Attorney III in the Division of Advocacy. Located in Frankfort, Kentucky, KPPA is responsible for the investment of funds and administration of pension and health insurance benefits for nearly 444,000 state and local government employees, state police officers, and nonteaching staff of local school boards and regional universities. Daily system activities, including administrative support, investment management, benefits counseling, accounting and payroll functions, and legal services, are performed by a staff of professional employees working as the KPPA. KPPA covers three separate systems: Kentucky Employees Retirement Systems (KERS), County Employees Retirement System (CERS), and the State Police Retirement System (SPRS).

This position offers an opportunity to litigate disability and other administrative cases before a hearing officer, to perform appellate litigation, and work closely with a team of skilled litigators and support staff in a collegial environment. KPPA attorneys have access to up-to-date legal research tools and are provided opportunities to attend relevant CLEs.

Requirements

• Must have two years experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law.
• Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR 2.112 (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission).
• Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.

Responsibilities

• Litigating KRS Chapter 13B administrative hearings, primarily involving disability cases.
• Appellate Litigation
• Collections
• Perform complex legal research and writing.
• Provide legal advice and training on a variety of agency issues
• Review Divorce Decrees, Powers of Attorney, Guardianship and Conservatorship Orders, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders
