Staff Android Systems Engineer

Greenlight Financial TechnologyAtlanta, GA
$165,000 - $240,000Hybrid

About The Position

Greenlight is seeking a Staff Android Systems Engineer to spearhead the development of Android-based products on custom hardware. This role involves end-to-end ownership of the application layer, close collaboration with the OS, working with hardware vendors, shaping AOSP integration, and establishing engineering standards for building, testing, and deploying on device. It's a hands-on, application-focused position for an individual with deep Android OS knowledge and the ability to mature a developing codebase for production. Technologies used include Kotlin, RxJava, MVI architecture, Retrofit, Bitrise, Espresso, and Android Jetpack.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 8 to 12 years of software engineering experience, with significant depth in Android platform or systems engineering.
  • AOSP fluency, including navigating the source tree and working with OEM/vendor teams.
  • Deep understanding of Android's security model (sandboxing, system app privileges, IPC threat surface, APK behavior variations).
  • Hands-on experience with update mechanisms (application-level to system-level OTA).
  • Comfort with adb shell and system-level diagnostic tools/tracing.
  • Experience shipping products where WebView is the primary UI surface.
  • Track record of building or evolving Android CI/CD pipelines, with knowledge of signing key hygiene, artifact provenance, and device-in-the-loop testing.
  • Experience designing device telemetry and fleet health systems, especially in constrained environments.
  • Quality-first mindset and ability to champion best practices in testing, observability, and release confidence.
  • Strong communication skills to translate technical findings for non-technical stakeholders and lead across teams.
  • Genuine excitement about AI and applying it to engineering problems.

Responsibilities

  • Work on Android apps that leverage AOSP capabilities, navigate framework code, collaborate with ROM and vendor teams, and translate app layer needs to platform capabilities.
  • Add and enhance existing functionality in the Greenlight Android mobile app.
  • Design and expose system services, Binder/IPC interfaces, and AIDL-based APIs for secure inter-process communication.
  • Own the permissions, signing, and app identity model, understanding the differences between standard and privileged/system apps.
  • Drive PackageManager and app installation strategy, including silent installs, self-updating apps, rollback, and verification.
  • Champion WebView as a primary UI surface, managing the native/web boundary, JS bridges, performance, security, and hybrid debugging.
  • Build and maintain Android CI/CD pipelines, including device-in-the-loop testing, self-hosted runners, multi-module builds, and automated deploys to real hardware.
  • Design, implement, and extend device telemetry, health signaling, and heartbeat systems, considering battery, bandwidth, and privacy.
  • Harden pilot-quality software into production-grade systems by adding observability, addressing failure modes, and improving reliability.
  • Build field debugging infrastructure, including log pipelines, crash capture without Firebase, remote bug reports, and on-device diagnostics.
  • Serve as the technical bridge between platform architecture and product engineers' daily challenges.
  • Mentor and lead peers in a distributed, cross-geography environment.
  • Translate technical findings into business-relevant insights for engineering, QA, and leadership.
  • Apply AI tooling to engineering problems in development, diagnostics, and platform automation.
