About The Position

Everlaw is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the company's AI technical strategy within its product. This position is central to Everlaw's vision of leading the legal discovery and litigation technology market through AI innovation. The role involves tackling complex AI challenges at a massive scale, processing millions or hundreds of millions of documents and multimodal inputs. The Staff AI Engineer will lead a core AI engineering squad, mentor engineers across the organization to enhance their AI expertise, and collaborate with a community of senior engineers specializing in databases, search, cloud infrastructure, SaaS application design, data science, and performance. This role offers significant visibility and interaction with the Chief Technology Officer and other senior leadership.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience working in ML/AI.
  • At least 8 years of overall software engineering experience.
  • Experience leading significant AI projects, including applied use of LLMs in production settings.
  • Experience with NLP/text analysis.
  • Programming skills in at least one scripting language (like Python).
  • A continuous learner, staying abreast of the latest AI developments and their potential applications.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with coworkers on different teams.
  • Ability to discuss technical details with experienced AI engineers and explain technical concepts without jargon.
  • Willingness to share knowledge and help others learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Retrieval-based LMs or hybrid approaches with RAG for finding answers in very large custom datasets.
  • Experience designing approaches for storage and representation of knowledge.
  • Familiarity with vector and graph databases.
  • Experience with multimodal approaches, including image, audio, or video processing.
  • Experience building agents to accomplish tasks, including supervision, backtracking, exception handling, tool use, and MCP.
  • Previous experience with SaaS and distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of Everlaw's technical AI strategy, staying at the forefront of frontier models.
  • Participate in early access programs with major AI labs (Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) to provide feedback on unreleased models and API design.
  • Stay abreast of evolving open-source AI offerings.
  • Devise the overall approach to using AI at trillion-token scale.
  • Guide the work of engineers across the company in using AI, leading by example in staying current with industry developments.
  • Share learnings with the team through structured methods like design document and code review feedback, and informal methods like tech talks or study groups on AI research papers.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, security engineers, data scientists, product leads, designers, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Identify new opportunities enabled by AI, spotting cases where ML/AI advancements can translate to Legal Tech.
  • Influence engineering and product direction based on emerging AI trends and opportunities.
