About The Position

The Staff Accountant position will be responsible for supporting the accounting activities of Georgia Power. The position will primarily have responsibility for the monthly closing of the Company’s financial records and timely and accurate preparation of documents to support internal and external reporting objectives, including SEC Forms 10-Q and 10-K and FERC Forms 1 and 3-Q. This position will report to Georgia Power’s Accounting Team Lead and will work closely with adjacent Financial Reporting and other support groups within Georgia Power and the Southern Company system, as well as with internal and external auditors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Entry level: Up to 4 years of accounting experience
  • Proficiency in applying U.S. GAAP
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and perform with a high level of accuracy to meet tight and often conflicting deadlines
  • Strong project management skills, including prioritizing tasks, building effective working relationships, balancing workload demands, anticipating next steps, and adapting quickly to changing needs
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with people at various levels, including executive management
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to present financial information in a clear, concise manner; detail-oriented
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and research capability, decision-maker; ability to simplify issues into an understandable and achievable plan of action

  • Possesses a professional demeanor and provides exceptional customer service
  • Intermediate experience with Excel (e.g. formulas, pivot tables, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in accounting or related field
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward certification
  • Experience in public accounting, technical accounting research, FERC/utility accounting, and/or financial reporting
  • Experience with Oracle Cloud ERP is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Perform month-end close activities, including accurate preparation, upload, and posting of journals to ensure timely month end closing and integrity of financials
  • Accounting for cash management transactions, including bank reconciliations and related journals, as well as researching and resolving discrepancies within cash accounts
  • Preparation and review of month-end accruals and other responsibilities as assigned
  • Complete account reconciliations by scheduled due date and ensure adequate supporting documentation is attached to the reconciliation
  • Prepare assigned sections of required external reports for FERC Forms 1 and 3Q, as well as SEC Form 10-K as needed
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley regulations, including compilation of control evidence
  • Provide expertise in accounting and reporting matters to internal and external auditors
  • Promote innovation, improve repetitive processes, and create efficiencies in a dynamic workflow environment
